Responsibilities and Duties
As a CO under the direct supervision of a higher-ranking officer, you will be responsible for the custody, security, safety, and well-being of individuals who are incarcerated in New York State correctional facilities.
Your duties will include:
· Playing a positive role in helping incarcerated individuals along their rehabilitation journey.
· Supervising the movement and activities of incarcerated individuals.
· Making periodic rounds of assigned areas.
· Conducting searches for contraband.
· Maintaining order within the facility and helping incarcerated individuals resolve problems.
· Preparing reports as necessary.
· Supervising incarcerated individuals who require mental health services at hospitals or health care centers outside of DOCCS facilities.
· Responsibly carrying and handling firearms.
Qualifications and Skills
You must be a U.S. citizen, a resident of New York State at the time of hire, and a high school graduate or GED holder. You can apply and begin the pre-employment screening steps before age 21, but you must be 21 at the time of hire.
To be considered for appointment, you must submit an application and then complete an online questionnaire about your education, training, and work experience.
All appointees will be employed as trainees. Before appointment, you will complete a fitness test, medical standards evaluation, psychological evaluation, and substance abuse screening. Cannabis use is not permitted for employees in this title.
CO trainees are required to complete a 12-month training program before advancing to a full CO position. As part of the program, you’ll attend the Correctional Services Training Academy for a formal training program. You must reside at the Training Academy Sunday evenings through Friday afternoons for eight weeks.
The program includes:
· Academic courses in emergency response procedures, and concepts and issues in corrections.
· Physical training to develop fitness, strength, and stamina.
· Exercises in proficiency with department-issued firearms and department-approved defensive techniques.
· Certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Upon graduation from the Training Academy Program, you will be a New York State Peace Officer and receive field training for four weeks, then be assigned to full duty at a correctional facility based upon staffing needs.

Salary
Starting base salary as a Correction Officer Trainee (including the eight-week paid Training Academy) is $56,465. After completing the one-year traineeship, the base salary for the Correction Officer position is $59,578. Yearly increases awarded upon completion of each service year are as follows.
Base: $59,578
After 1-6 years: Increase of $2,221 per completed year
After 10 years: $76,830
After 15 years: $80,286
After 20 years: $85,077
After 25 years: $89,072
Additional compensation in addition to base salary can include inconvenience pay (up to $2,006 per year), location pay (up to $3,871 per year), hazardous duty pay (up to $1,875 per year) , and expanded duty pay (up to $2,900 per year)
