The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is hiring Park and Recreation Aides for Saranac Lake Islands Campground in Saranac Lake, NY. Candidates must be at least 18 years of age or older. Must complete the NYS Boater Safety Course prior to employment. Preference is given to candidates with a drivers license.
This is a seasonal position beginning in May. The position is budget dependent and the end date will be determined based on campground closing date and budget.
Job Requirements/Duties
- Will be required to operate the septic pumping boat between campground islands to pump outhouses one or two days per week.
- Must be able to operate motor boat.
- Must be comfortable getting on and off boats onto rocky shorelines.
- Must have dependable transportation and be able to work assigned shifts. Must be punctual, reporting for work on time. Shift work may be required when assigned to booth areas or shower building cleaning.
- Should expect to work all weekends and holidays during period of employment.
- Must be able to do manual work in park such as picking up litter, raking, pushing lawnmowers, digging ditches, climbing roofs to sweep pine needles and leaves, and cleaning comfort stations, rest rooms and buildings. Extra physical work may be required such as aiding in removal of brush and or firewood and moving canoes and rowboats.
- Candidate must be willing and able to maintain cleanliness of public facilities including bathrooms and showers.
- Must be able to communicate with others and accept direction.
- Must be well groomed, wear appropriate attire, including closed toed shoes. Issued clothing must be kept clean and worn while on duty.
- Must be even tempered and capable of communicating with the public. Provides patrons with information regarding park facilities and use. Handles complaints or inquiries from park patrons regarding the quality of their experience, the cleanliness of facilities, noise from other facility users, and other related customer service issues.
- May be designated as lead worker in a small group of other seasonal staff.
