You must pass competencies for this position.

Reachable on appropriate Civil Service list for FSW 2 or eligible for transfer.

Provisional Opportunity – In the event that there is not a viable eligible list, candidates who meet the following qualifications may be qualified for a provisional appointment: one year of permanent service as a Food Service Worker 1. If appointed provisionally you must take the next scheduled exam and receive a reachable score before you can be permanently appointed.

In accordance with Section 52.7 of the Civil Service Law, this notice advises all employees of the Department of Health of our intention to conduct a non-competitive promotion examination for the position of Food Service Worker 2 at Helen Hayes Hospital. Permanent appointment may be made by non-competitive promotion of an applicant who meets the position’s minimum qualifications if all requirements of non-competitive promotion are met.
The promotion field for the Food Service Worker 2 position consists of candidates who have 1 year of permanent service as a Food Service Worker 1.
This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).
For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title maybe filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments. In June 2024, if a temporary NY HELPS employee is satisfactorily performing in the position, the appointment will be changed from temporary pending Civil Service Commission Action to permanent non-competitive and the official probationary period will begin.
At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
Non-Competitive Minimum Qualifications
Two years of qualifying experience in commercial or institutional food preparation or food service. Examples of qualifying experience: employment in a hospital, nursing home, or school cafeteria; residential dining hall; restaurant; or diner. Experience must have included responsibility for food preparation, food service, and ordering of food and non-food supplies.
Minimum Qualifications Substitution
Formal culinary arts or food service training which resulted in a certificate or degree may be credited towards experience.
Preferred Qualifications/Competencies
Supervisory experience in institutional kitchen/food service operation.
Competent in Meditech and Computrition.
Strong knowledge of HACCP procedures/safe food handling.
