The Wadsworth Center’s Division of Environmental Health Sciences (DEHS) is comprised of organic, inorganic and microbiological laboratories where skilled staff are relied upon to analyze environmental samples and human specimens, to identify and quantitate chemical contaminants that are known or suspected to be hazardous to public health. This position in the Laboratory of Inorganic and Nuclear Chemistry is essential to support drinking water testing for cyanide in small public water supplies throughout New York State as mandated by state and federal regulations. The water supplies are tested on an annual schedule determined by the DOH Center for Environmental Health. The lab also serves as the Principal Lab for New York State under the Environmental Protection Agency’s Safe Drinking Water Act which requires the lab to maintain accreditation for specific inorganic contaminants, including cyanide, and water quality parameters, such as total organic carbon, turbidity, and color. The lab is also an accredited Proficiency Test Provider and validates proficiency test samples used by the DOH Environmental Laboratory Approval Program to certify environmental testing labs.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in the natural sciences and two years of post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field, or a Master's degree in the appropriate field and one year of post-degree professional research experience in that field.
Preferred Qualifications: MPH/MS in Environmental Health Sciences, Chemistry, or related field, experience with sample preparation and analysis of environmental samples, experience using Microsoft Excel or equivalent software for data processing and other related tasks, strong organizational and communication skills, and ability to manage multiple tasks and adapt to changes during the workday.
