The Office of the New York State Attorney General is seeking an experienced Assistant Chief to join its Office of
Special Investigation (OSI) in Albany. OSI was created in April 2021 by legislation which represents the codification
and the expansion of the role previously performed by the Special Investigations and Prosecutions Unit (SIPU),
created by Executive Order 147 that became effective on July 8, 2015. The Unit includes experienced homicide
prosecutors and detectives throughout the State. Candidates should be hard-working, motivated and committed to
public service on behalf of the people of the State of New York.
- Must have at least ten (10) years of law enforcement supervisory experience, preferably holding the police rank
- Must also have current NYS basic police academy certification approved by DCJS or the ability to successfully
- Must have extensive experience in the investigation of confidential and sensitive matters.
- Must have advanced expertise in investigating, managing and supervising homicides, police-involved shootings,
- Awareness of pending or proposed legislation related to OCI related work (e.g., use of force, less than lethal
- Experience and skill in making recommendations for changes in policing policy.
- Must possess a valid NYS driver license with ability to operate a motor vehicle.
- The NYS Public Officers Law requires that all police officers be citizens of the United States of America and
reside within the State of New York at the time of appointment.
- Expert interviewing and interrogation skills.
- Experience effectively conducting and managing multiple investigations.
- Experience interacting, coordinating, and working with other law enforcement agencies.
- Have established law enforcement contacts throughout the State of New York.
- Excellent interpersonal communication and strong writing skills.
- Advanced proficiency with computers, common word processing applications, use of search engines,
- Commitment to a collaborative team environment and to nurturing an integrated, inclusive, and diverse culture.
- The ability to read, write, speak and understand a second language in addition to English (e.g., Spanish,
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
The annual salary for this position is $136,247. Performance of the duties may require frequent, unscheduled work on
evenings and weekends and requires 24/7 availability. This position is in the exempt class, and incumbents serve at the
pleasure of the Attorney General.
