Overview
The Communications Director will oversee the Senator’s communications team and develop and execute the Senator’s strategic communications plan.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement annual communications plan, including annual mail plan, media strategy, and coordinating press events
  • Draft and distribute Senator’s monthly e-newsletter
  • Draft opinion editorials, press releases, statements and speeches
  • Oversee day to day communications tasks, including social media, photo-caps, etc.
  • Maintain Senator’s website
  • Act as the primary point of contact for media inquiries
  • Develop and implement strategy for growing social media and earned media opportunities
  • Brief the Senator and team on current issues of district, statewide and national importance
  • Act as direct supervisor for communications staff, assigning tasks as needed
  • Work closely with the Chief of Staff, Legislative Director, District Operations Director and the Senator to ensure messaging is current, correct and effective
  • Attend events with or on behalf of the Senator.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 3-5 years of communications experience in the public, private or non-profit sector
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Ability to research complex issues and convey findings clearly and concisely in writing
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and prioritize tasks effectively
  • Demonstrated interest in local and state government and policy
  • Familiarity with the 54th Senate District and issues impacting the Finger Lakes Region

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1 or more years of supervisory experience
  • Experience working in government, preferably at the state level
  • Experience collaborating with local and statewide media outlets

The salary range is $75,000 to $85,000, depending on skills and experience.
