What are the responsibilities and job description for the Communications Director position at New York State Senate?
Overview
The Communications Director will oversee the Senator’s communications team and develop and execute the Senator’s strategic communications plan.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement annual communications plan, including annual mail plan, media strategy, and coordinating press events
- Draft and distribute Senator’s monthly e-newsletter
- Draft opinion editorials, press releases, statements and speeches
- Oversee day to day communications tasks, including social media, photo-caps, etc.
- Maintain Senator’s website
- Act as the primary point of contact for media inquiries
- Develop and implement strategy for growing social media and earned media opportunities
- Brief the Senator and team on current issues of district, statewide and national importance
- Act as direct supervisor for communications staff, assigning tasks as needed
- Work closely with the Chief of Staff, Legislative Director, District Operations Director and the Senator to ensure messaging is current, correct and effective
- Attend events with or on behalf of the Senator.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required
- 3-5 years of communications experience in the public, private or non-profit sector
- Excellent writing skills
- Ability to research complex issues and convey findings clearly and concisely in writing
- Ability to meet tight deadlines and prioritize tasks effectively
- Demonstrated interest in local and state government and policy
- Familiarity with the 54th Senate District and issues impacting the Finger Lakes Region
Preferred Qualifications:
- 1 or more years of supervisory experience
- Experience working in government, preferably at the state level
- Experience collaborating with local and statewide media outlets
The salary range is $75,000 to $85,000, depending on skills and experience.
