The Appellate Division, Third Department is hiring two (2) Attorneys for a position in The Mental Hygiene Legal Service in Albany County. The position will be filled based on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate in one of the following titles: Associate Attorney, Senior Attorney, Attorney or Assistant Attorney.
The Mental Hygiene Legal Service (“MHLS”) provides legal representation and advocacy to individuals with mental and developmental disabilities, and those alleged to be in need of mental health services, in legal matters including civil and criminal commitment, treatment over objection, guardianship, sex offender civil management, and assisted outpatient treatment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Providing legal services and assistance to people in or alleged to be in need of care and treatment in mental hygiene facilities.
- Regularly appear in judicial and administrative proceedings pertaining to retention, care, and treatment of people in mental hygiene facilities.
- Advocate informally on behalf of clients in various settings.
- Represent clients at administrative hearings and other legal proceedings.
Qualifications:
Associate Attorney: Admission to the New York State Bar and two (2) years of service in the Senior Attorney title; or equivalent legal experience. Salary: $110,853
Senior Attorney: Admission to the New York State bar and two (2) years of service in the Attorney title; or equivalent legal experience. Salary: $99,490
Attorney: Admission to the New York State bar. Salary: $84,659
Assistant Attorney: Graduation from an accredited law school and admission to New York State Bar within 18 months of appointment. Salary: $76,112
A valid driver's license and reliable vehicle are required
Trial experience is preferred
