The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Supervising Steamfitter within the Office of Facilities/Project Control.
This title is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission; meaning that a candidate for the position will be placed as a provisional employee. At a later date the candidate will be required to take an examination administered by the Civil Service Commission. Candidates must score and rank high enough on this examination in order to remain in the position as a permanent employee.
DEFINITION: Under direction, supervises and works with a group of steamfitters engaged in the installation, maintenance and repair of high pressure steamfitting fixtures and systems, steam heating auxiliary equipment and steam operated equipment; does related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
1. Graduation from High School or Vocational School or possession of an approved High School Equivalent Certificate.
2. Five (5) years of experience in work involving the installation, maintenance and repair of steamfitting fixtures, fittings, and machinery.
3. Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Organizes assigned steamfitting tasks and develops effective work methods.
2. Supervises and performs the steamfitting work involved in the maintenance, installation and repair of high pressure steam pipes, fittings, pumps, boilers and furnaces, steam heating auxiliary equipment, and steam operated equipment.
3. Inspects, and analyzes steamfitting projects to be completed; determines malfunctions and makes emergency repairs.
4. Supervises the inspection and testing of work in progress.
5. Prepares estimates of labor, materials, supplies, and equipment necessary for repair, maintenance, or installation projects.
6. Delegates assignments, provides guidance and instruction to subordinate employees, and supervises their work performance.
7. Interprets graphic symbols used on piping drawings; interprets data from the stationary fireman's log.
8. Supervises the use of, and works with various machine and hand tools common to the steamfitting trade.
9. Prepares or works with sketches, plans, and specifications in accordance with plumbing codes and approved trade practices.
10. Prepares reports and maintains records of completed projects.
11. May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
12. Perform other duties and tasks assigned by supervisor.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
1. Knowledge of the problems involved in the installation, maintenance, and repair of steamfitting fixtures, fittings, and machinery.
2. Knowledge of the problems, procedures, and methods used to inspect and analyze steamfitting projects.
3. Knowledge of the proper and safe use of the varied machine and hand tools common to the steamfitting trade, and of safety precautions exercised in the performance of these tasks.
4. Ability to organize assigned steamfitting tasks, and develop effective work methods.
5. Ability to delegate steamfitting tasks, provide guidance and instruction to subordinate staff, and supervise their work performance.
6. Ability to prepare and maintain reports of completed projects.
7. Ability to inspect and analyze steamfitting projects through various phases of completion.
8. Ability to observe the necessary safety precautions exercised in the performance of steamfitting tasks.
9. Ability to prepare estimates of labor, materials, supplies, and equipment.
10. Ability to work with sketches, plans, and specifications.
11. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
12. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

1. Salary: $118,855
2. Employment Period: Twelve (12) Months
