Founding Engineer - Senior Mechanical Engineer

We are seeking a visionary and dynamic Founding Engineer to lead our technology R&D efforts. As the first person on board, you will greatly impact the direction of technological innovation and the execution of our mission.

Newlight's mission is to accelerate the transition of the maritime industry to sustainable energy by making sustainable shipping affordable and focusing on the current fleet with hydrogen integration. Newlight develops a plugin for ships that reduces fuel consumption and emissions by injecting hydrogen as a dual fuel for existing engines.

What You Will Be Doing:

• Oversee the design, development, and deployment of Newlight’s hybrid diesel-hydrogen plugin system.

• Plan and execute experiments and process diagrams, conduct safety reviews, and assist with equipment setup. 

• Evaluate test results to help improve predictive 1D/3D models and guide design improvements for better combustion performance and durability.

• Provide hands-on technical guidance and problem-solving with IC engines and hydrogen systems.

• Work as a field engineer to install the system on board and ensure its proper operation according to the plan.

• Theoretical and practical understanding of fuel properties, combustion processes, pollutant formation, and working knowledge of burner/combustor designs.

Requirements we seek:

• MSc in Mechanical Engineering, or in a related field, or higher. 

• Strong background in mechanical and electrical systems.

• Expertise in hydrogen technology and hybrid systems is highly desirable.

• Experience with dual-fuel IC engines and related technologies.

• Familiarity with CAD software (eg, NX, SolidWorks).                                        

• Hands-on mentality, solution oriented.

Ways To Stand Out:

• A Ph.D.

• Strong background in mechanical and electrical systems, particularly in the maritime or automotive sectors.

• Expertise in hydrogen technology and hybrid systems.

• Passion for environmental sustainability and a deep commitment to Newlight's mission of maritime decarbonization.

• Knowledge in working with Python/PyTorch, Next.js, LabVIEW, and MATLAB. Knowledge in developing ML algorithms.

• Experience using Lloyd's register/DNV rules, regulations, and standards.

• Familiarity with ship engineering drawings.

• Experience with CFD tools and simulations (Star-ccm, Gt suite, or CONVERGE).
