Title: School Health Aide Classification: Grade 4 Reports to: Assistant Principal Student Services FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Effective Date: 03/28/2025 Union Status: N/A Summary The Health Aide supports students in the classroom who require health and academic services throughout the day. Under the direct supervision of the School Nurse, the Health Aide performs routine health-related tasks and clerical duties, assisting in meeting the healthcare needs of students. Performance Duties and Responsibilities Utilizes protocols developed by the School Nurse to guide care for students and staff. Assists in promoting the personal, social, and physical health of students. Contributes to the establishment of a safe and healthy learning environment. Communicates effectively with school district members and parents. Responds to emergencies calmly and adapts to changes productively. Assists the teacher in implementing specialized strategies and interventions designed to reinforce material or skills based on an understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities. Reinforces material initially introduced by the teacher. Aids in fostering self-help and independence skills, including toileting/diapering, lifting/transfers, feeding, and seizure procedures. Implements remedial exercises, practice drills, and review work as outlined by the teacher. Care Provider Adheres to established school procedures and protocols for care and the reporting of injuries and illnesses. Provides first aid to students and staff as needed. Administers daily and emergency medications as delegated by the School Nurse. Under the direction and supervision of the building administrator, assumes authority to provide emergency care within the scope of practice until emergency personnel arrive, should the School Nurse be unavailable. Assists the School Nurse with the hygiene and personal care needs of students. Follows standard precautions, including OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standards, when managing health-related situations. Serves as a bus monitor for students with health needs. Office Assistant Assists in the daily operations of the health office under the guidance of the School Nurse. Performs clerical duties in the Health Office as assigned by the School Nurse. Documents and maintains health records and assists with immunization follow-up as directed by the School Nurse. Keeps accurate records, documentation, and reports related to the position, as requested by the School Nurse. Maintains inventory and ensures stock supplies are replenished periodically. Communications Communicates health concerns to the School Nurse on a daily basis. Maintains confidentiality at all times within the school and the community. Notifies parents/guardians of ill or injured students under the direction of the School Nurse. Consults with the School Nurse regarding unusual or challenging situations that may arise. Professional Responsibilities Promotes the value of health in education. Supports the philosophy and mission of the school and district. Demonstrates punctuality, reliability, and responsibility in adherence to school policies and procedures. Maintains professional competence through in-service education provided by the district and other self-directed professional growth activities. Upholds a professional appearance. Accepts constructive criticism and demonstrates improvements in performance and behavior. Complies with Board policy and health department guidelines. Maintains confidentiality regarding students, staff, and families. Understands state child protection laws, rules, regulations, and school policies regarding the reporting of child abuse/neglect. Uses appropriate spoken English, including reading and comprehending English-language materials. Performs additional duties as assigned by the School Nurse, School Administrators, or Director of Student Services, consistent with the general responsibilities and qualifications for the position. Minimum Qualifications High School diploma or equivalent. Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) certification required. Current First Aid and CPR certification. Knowledge, Ability, Skill Knowledge: Understanding of Bloodborne Pathogens, CPR, and medical care within the scope of practice. Working knowledge of state child protection laws, regulations, and school policies regarding the reporting of child abuse/neglect. Ability: Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with the School Nurse, students, staff, and parents. Capable of working independently under the supervision of a Building Administrator, School Nurse, or Special Education Case Manager in various health-related and student service situations. Skills: Proficient in skills typically associated with the scope of practice. Supervision Received: Works under the direction of the School Nurse (RN), Special Education Case Manager, and Building Administration. Exercised: None Responsibility: Assists students requiring health and academic services throughout the day, supporting both the classroom teacher and the School Nurse as needed. Job Environment Work is performed in various school settings, including classroom, the health office, and related areas. The role may also involve working outdoors during activities such as P.E., recess, bus monitoring, or other related events. Frequent contact is made with school departments, students, and staff, and the employee may interact with parents, the public, and outside agencies or organizations. The employee has access to confidential information relevant to the assignment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to communicate, hear, walk, handle or feel objects, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must possess sufficient physical agility and strength to respond to emergency situations, such as performing CPR or the Heimlich maneuver if necessary.
