About this role

What will you be responsible for?
The Principal Underground Mining will create and lead operational excellence standards in our underground mines, apply expert guidance, optimize operational practices, and deliver targeted advice to enhance mining process effectiveness, whilst building onsite leadership, promoting safety, and collaborating with sites to close performance gaps including the optimization of mining contractors.

Your role will consist of

Here is a snapshot of what your day to day will look like:
  • Create and lead the development of an Underground Mining Technical Standard relevant to our underground operations, including core principles and methodologies for rapid replication, and ensure alignment with the Fatal Risk Management (FRM) standards for associated Underground Mining activities.
  • Develop and enhance operational control initiatives with sites, including developing robust critical controls and associated verification activities for underground mining operations.
  • Create operational excellence standards and governance practices for mining activities in our underground mines, including formation of Communities of Practice (CoP) for underground mining, and sharing of best practices in the business.
  • Deliver guidance and targeted advice to site-based mining leadership for end-to-end process optimization in underground mining activities (from initial underground development to ore delivered into the crusher / materials handling system).
  • Investigate, challenge and optimize mining practices in our underground mines, including being actively involved in or leading incident investigations and corrective action outcomes.
  • Monitor for weak signals in the underground mining data set and recommend proactive action being taken onsite to address issues before they manifest into incidents or unwanted outcomes.
  • Design performance tactics to close gaps to benchmark and OEE targets, and collaborate with sites to close these gaps in a targeted, measured way.
  • Actively engage colleagues in the D process for mine-to-mill optimization activities including active feedback on fragmentation, diggability, production rate, and deliver targeted guidance on improvements required to lower the overall cost per tonne for our underground mines.
  • Build onsite operational leadership in mining through targeted training, coaching and mentoring, including development of succession plans of key personnel across our underground sites.
  • Spend purposeful, targeted-time onsite with operational leadership to drive sites to lift underground mining performance in-the-field including safety, health, production and financial outcomes.

Education:
  • Formal qualifications in underground mining practice would be advantageous, including supervisory / mine management skills as recognized by a regulatory body.
  • Membership of an internationally-recognized mining association would be advantageous - for example, SME or AusIMM.
  • Registration as a practicing professional engineer would be viewed favorably.
Experience:
  • Note that the primary skills required include underground mining operational excellence knowledge and experience, performance optimization, and functional leadership.
  • The individual must possess mining operational experience and expertise with a minimum of 5 years in operational roles relevant to underground gold mining operations.
  • The individual must have practical mining supervisory and leadership experience, and be able to interface with technical and operational staff for process optimization.
  • Considering the expert advisory aspect of the role, the accepted body of knowledge, includes formal education qualifications in Mining Engineering or related fields relevant to underground mining design, optimization and support
  • Demonstrated continuous professional development in the field of underground mining would be highly regarded, including evidence of competency and training in mining processes and practices.
  • Practical knowledge of underground mining contractor management processes would be advantageous in this role.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Note that the primary technical skills include underground mining operational excellence, performance optimization, and site leadership support. For this Principal role, the individual must demonstrate advanced proficiency in these areas.
  • Essential soft skills for leadership and support would include the ability to actively listen, appropriately challenge and provide coaching and support to underground mining professionals.
  • Technical skills must include the ability to critically review mine plans and designs, including dig and dump, road networks and bench turnover relevant to underground mining operations.
  • Familiarity and proficiency with underground mining performance monitoring and improvement through analysis using quantitative tools including Excel and Power BI.
  • Ability to convey technical insights and knowledge in a practical and pragmatic way to operational leadership on our operating underground sites.
  • Ability to track actual mining performance through metrics and analysis, including strong analytical and problem-solving skills in the investigation and diagnosis of operational inefficiencies relevant to underground mining practice.
  • Ability to present technical insights and recommendations to key internal and external stakeholders through platforms including PowerPoint and Word documentation.
  • Ability to influence through facts and figures to key operational and site leaders.
  • Must be a team-player and willing to work with colleagues across other mining disciplines to optimize mine-to-mill initiatives from a technical perspective.
Working conditions and location

  • The position is located in the Denver Corporate office, remote, hybrid and open to other Regional Newmont hub locations
  • The individual must be able to travel both domestically and internationally to our operating sites to interface with site leaders and review underground mining performance on-the-ground.

The salary range offered for this role is USD $160,880 - $191,045. The salary range is tied to the Colorado market for jobs performed in Colorado. The salary offer to the successful candidate will be based on job-related education, training, and/or experience. The salary offer will not be based on a candidate’s salary history at other jobs, and by law, Newmont will not seek information about salary history, and candidates should not share such information with Newmont.
This role will be eligible for participation in a discretionary annual bonus program, pursuant to which an employee may be awarded a percentage of their salary based on the company’s performance and their own individual performance. This role also will be eligible for participation in a discretionary long-term incentive program, pursuant to which an employee may receive awards based on their level and individual performance.
