Museum On-Call Receptionist Job Description
Summary
The Museum Receptionists are primarily responsible for providing visitors with a high level of seamless service and an exceptional Museum experience. As a key Museum representative, the Receptionist is responsible for ensuring that all guests have a positive and meaningful experience at the Museum, and that they are aware of the many ways they can stay involved.
On-call receptionists are utilized when staffing shortages necessitate an extra set of hands. This can range from 1-2 days per week (6.5-13 hrs), and more in cases of absence or vacations. There is potential for the hours of this role to increase as operating hours extend during the spring and summer.
Weekend availability is ideal.
The on-call receptionists would know as soon as possible when coverage is needed-- at least one week in advance. Emergency coverage will be requested as needed, including the night-before and morning-of.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain on-call shifts at the Museum front desks (W-S 10:30AM-4:30 PM, Sundays 11:30 AM-4:30 PM).
- Represent the Museum during special events, evening functions, and off-site programs
- Maintain familiarity with emergency procedures
- Meet and maintain the Museum’s reception standards, which include:
- Welcome, direct all visitors, tour groups, vendors and members of the general public, professionally and promptly
- Maintain a well-informed working knowledge of the Museum’s calendar, exhibitions, history, special events and programs, classes, and membership opportunities
- Execute visitor surveys to assessment of the visitor experience
- Support Museum security with respect to visitors, conduct routine gallery checks
- Turning on and off lights and equipment for galleries
- Take and direct incoming phone calls, mail, e-mail, and deliveries
- Process payments and admission
BACKGROUND & QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience involving interaction with the public, preferably in a hospitality/tourism/attraction setting
- Interest in fine art and museums
SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Strong customer service, interpersonal and public relations skills; ability to communicate effectively with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds, children and families. Knowledge of arts and cultural audiences preferred.
- Clear and effective verbal/written communication skills
- Dependability, flexibility, adaptability
- Basic computer and office skills (processing transactions, checking email and phones)
- Ability to represent the museum with a high level of integrity and professionalism, adhere to museum policies and support management decisions in a positive, professional manner
COMPENSATION: This is a part time hourly position starting at $16/hr.
