Primary scheduled hours: Per-Diem - Variable 8 hour shifts.
Job Summary:
Assists surgeon during operative and invasive procedures. Ensures operating suite is adequately prepared for procedure. Monitors PAR level of all surgical instruments and supplies. Cleans and sterilizes all surgical instruments. Participates in departmental staff meetings and performance improvement activities. Responsible for decontamination, cleaning, processing and sterilization of supplies and equipment dispensed by the department following established infection prevention and control practices. Directs and checks the work of others in the absence of management staff. Willingness to accept new ideas and work under stressful conditions. Participates in the department’s performance improvement activities. Takes Call as assigned.
Essential Job Functions:
- Demonstrates competence in care of specimens and accurately handles specimens at all times.
- Assists in positioning, prepping, and draping of patients for surgical procedures.
- Accurately completes operating room counts (instruments, sponges, needles); follows proper procedure in the event of incorrect count; reports all discrepancies to Circulating RN and surgeon and/or corrects immediately.
- Carries out medical/surgical asepsis during treatments/procedures.
- Maintains safe environment for patient, co-workers, and self, per hospital policies and procedures.
- Checks all equipment/instruments needed, prior to each procedure to ensure proper functioning.
- Protects patient’s sensitivities and right to privacy; closely observes patient with minimal disturbance.
Education Background and Experience
Minimum Education:
Minimum High School diploma or equivalent.
Graduate of a Surgical Technology program.
Required Licensure / Certifications:
- Current BCLS Certification.
- Call is required for this position with 30-minute response time.
- One (1) or more years of surgical experience.
- Enthusiasm to advance knowledge and train in required disciplines.
- Surgical Technician Registered
Preferred Licensure / Certifications:
Surgical Technologist Certification (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
Preferred Experience:
Minimum of one (1) year of work experience in the operating room/sterile processing.
