What are the responsibilities and job description for the Seasonal Gardener position at Newton Cemetery & Arboretum?
With over 1,000 flower beds, 4000 trees and shrubs, 3 gardens to maintain, the Seasonal Gardener uses best practices to create the Cemetery & Arboretum's 100 acres of park-like atmosphere.
An active cemetery since 1855 and accredited arboretum since 2014, Newton Cemetery & Arboretum is a private, non-profit organization serving the needs of all faiths for Newton and the Boston Area.
Essential Duties of the Seasonal Gardener:
Assist staff members with various tasks including:
- Weeding, mulching, and brush chipping
- Pruning
- Transplanting: annuals, perennials, trees, and shrubs
- Watering
- IPM (Integrated Pest Management) practices
- Greenhouse tasks: seeding, watering, potting up, making trays, spacing
- Mowing, string trimming, and leaf clean-up
- Landscape maintenance
Qualified Applicants Must:
Must be 18 years of age. Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license. Must be able to perform manual labor, including frequent lifting/carrying/transporting loads up to 50 lbs. Required to work in all weather conditions in all seasons and essential staff for weather-related emergencies impacting the grounds.
