DESCRIPTION OF POSTION:
Under the direction of the Child Nutrition Director, will provide leadership and ensure the mission and goals of Newton-Conover City Schools Child Nutrition Department are met. Work involves, but is not limited to:
- Managing a specific facility site effectively and efficiently
- Responsible for the preparation and serving of high quality nutritious meals in a friendly and customer-oriented manner
- Training, supervising, leading, and mentoring school cafeteria employees to facilitate their success
- Expected to develop site employees to become independent and efficient employees
- Provide high-quality training to ensure all state and federal guidelines are followed
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: High School Diploma or equivalent
QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrates aptitude, competence and experience for assigned responsibilities.
SALARY GRADE: 57
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Requires maintaining emotional control under stress
- Supervises the production and serving of quality meals for students and staff
- Follows meal accountability procedures per state and federal regulations
- Maintains accurate financial records as prescribed by the Child Nutrition Director and Finance Officer
- Maintains accurate employee time records
- Maintains records on food and supplies received and used
- Responsible for maintaining proper storage and security of food and supplies
- Responsible for the security of revenue from cafeteria services until deposited
- Follows menus as published to ensure correct meal pattern contributions are met
- Assigns, directs, plans, and supervises the work of cafeteria employees
- Communicates effectively with staff to meet site and department goals
- Prepares annual evaluations for all cafeteria employees
- Provides continuous feedback related to job performance in order for employees to grow and learn
- Assists in the preparation of food, serving, cash accountability and daily cleaning
- ServSafe certification required and maintained
- Monitors and ensures safe food handling practices, sanitation, and HACCP procedures
- Plans work schedules to help staff build time management skills
- Holds periodic staff meetings to further educate cafeteria team
- Fosters good relations with staff to ensure they work as a team
- Ensures daily cleaning is completed and the cafeteria is maintained in a clean, organized, and sanitary manner
- Responsible for ensuring all equipment in the cafeteria area is in safe working condition. Notifies the appropriate person(s) when repairs or replacements are needed
- Instructs all cafeteria personnel in performing their assigned duties
- Offers recommendations for improvement of the cafeteria operation to the Child Nutrition Director and/or Supervisor/Roving Manager
- Ability to use critical thinking skills to solve problems that arise and prevent crisis
- Performs related duties as assigned by Child Nutrition Director or Supervisor/Roving Manager
- Maintains a neat, clean appearance with appropriate dress and follows uniform policy
- Demonstrates a high degree of professionalism and ethics, working cooperatively with the Board, the Superintendent, Administrators, Certified and Classified personnel, parents, and students
- Properly trains/teaches staff in order to build a knowledgeable team that works together to achieve exceptional customer service, serve quality food, and run site effectively
- Demonstrates proficiency in written and oral communication, as well as basic mathematical skills.
- Attend all meetings as required by the Child Nutrition Director and Superintendent.
PHYSICAL ABILITY:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The ability to be a safe food handler, free of diseases that may be transmitted by food is an absolute necessity. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and be able to transfer extremely hot and heavy food pans from food preparation equipment to serving area. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The selected candidate must be able to perform duties of a rigorous work schedule which includes lifting, loading, and unloading, and pass a physical examination and drug screen certifying this ability.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Child Nutrition employees may be exposed to extreme hot/humid and cold temperatures either while cooking or storing and retrieving items from the freezer. Continual standing, walking, lifting, pushing, pulling moderately heavy and/or bulky items, and exposure to loud noises.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of Support Services Personnel.
