Job Title: Sheriff’s Administrative Tech I

Job Summary: This is the entry level of the Sheriff’s Office administrative positions. This

position is responsible for performing clerical and administrative duties, including typing, data

entry, and filing duties associated with processing inmates in/out of the detention facility,

assisting the public, and processing court documents for the Sheriff’s Office.

Pay Grade FLSA: Non-exempt

Major Duties: 

Generates several types of bonds, takes cash payoffs, generates receipts, and maintains
inmate records. 

Maintains and files, both physical and electronic, as directed. 

Receives and responds to request in person and over the phone; directs individual to correct
person or division. 

Performs general customer service, answer questions and request from public. 

Processes fingerprints for the public, employees, and criminal offenses (adult and juvenile). 

Maintains GCIC/NCIC terminal, answers hits, sends messages, and pulls warrants to ensure
validity. 

Maintains paper and electronic logs, forms and other documents, prepares items for storage
or destruction, and assist in maintaining the security and confidentiality of applicable

information. 

Assist other divisions, external customers, and outside agencies concerning the status of
inmates and/or court documents. 

Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge Required by Position: 

Knowledge of basic telephone etiquette, and customer relations. 

Knowledge of applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures related to assigned
activities. 

Knowledge of GCIC/NCIC rules and regulations, operations and policy manual and how to
complete required forms. 

Knowledge of Sheriff’s Office information system database. 

Knowledge of law enforcement practices and procedures related to reporting. 

Skill in operating modern office equipment. 

Ability to work confidentially with discretion and integrity. 

Ability to handle multiple interruptions and adjust priorities throughout the day. 

Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions. 

Ability to maintain routine records. 

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. 

Ability to deal with the general public in person or by phone, as well as employees of the
various county offices in all types of contacts arising during daily work activities 

Ability to work courteously and tactfully with general public and employees. 

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Ability to gain GCIC and NCIC certification within one year. 

Supervisory Controls: Work is assigned in terms of specific tasks and duties. Work is

evaluated on accuracy, quality, and timeliness.

Guidelines: Guidelines include the Sheriff’s Office Policy and Procedures and Sheriff Office

Post Orders.

Complexity: This position consists of performing a wide variety of clerical and customer

relations duties of moderate complexity.

Scope and Effect: This position performs a wide variety of administrative and customer service

duties that affect the Detention Division.

Personal Contacts: Contacts are typically with co-workers, the general public, courts, and other

law enforcement agencies.

Purpose of Contacts: Contacts are typically to give and exchange information, resolve

problems, and provide services.

Physical Demands: The work is typically performed with the employee sitting at a desk. The

employee uses office equipment requiring dexterity; visual acuity in both eyes, normal color

vision; hear in-person and in telephone conversations; recognize differences or changes in sound

patterns, loudness or pitch; speak audibly and clearly

Work Environment: The work is typically performed in an office environment.

Supervisory and Management Responsibility: None.

Newton County Position Classifications

Basic Qualifications: 

High school diploma or equivalent. 

GCIC/NCIC Certification or ability to obtain within 30 days. 

Notary Public or ability to obtain.

Preferred Qualifications: 

Certified fingerprint classification. 

Fingerprint Classification Course.
