Job Title: Detention Maintenance
Job Summary: This position serves as a skilled level worker who repairs and maintains
buildings and other structures at the Newton County Sheriff’s Office. The person in this position
is responsible for coordination of the general maintenance and up-keep of the buildings and
grounds, and oversees staff and inmates assigned to help in this area.
Pay Grade: FLSA: Non-exempt
Major Duties:
Implements a comprehensive facilities preventative maintenance program while insuring the
capability to respond immediately to unexpected, critical maintenance needs.
Performs and supervises a variety of cleaning and maintenance functions at the Newton
County Sheriff’s Office; operates various types of equipment and supplies in making internal
and external facility repairs; assesses need for, orders, distributes and stores necessary
maintenance supplies.
Maintains records/logs on work, maintenance schedules, work orders and supplies.
Assigns corrective maintenance, preventive maintenance and custodial work to the trusties.
Reviews daily inspection reports of facilities in conjunction with inmate services.
Performs and/or supervises repairs and maintenance on the physical plant equipment to
include boilers, HVAC and electrical gate system.
Coordinates and monitors work performance and completion of maintenance contract
services.
Maintains and repairs all security systems and locking controls in the Sheriff’s Office
complex.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge Required by the Position:
Knowledge of principles and practices of construction, maintenance and repair of buildings,
grounds, plumbing, electrical system and building fixtures and equipment
Knowledge of materials and supplies used in building and equipment maintenance and
construction.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Skill in the use and function of equipment used in the cleaning and maintenance of the
physical plant.
Ability to plan for and coordinate facilities modifications or moves
Ability to establish effective working relationships with other County employees.
Ability to understand, carry out and give directions.
Ability to simultaneously complete a variety of tasks.
Supervisory Controls: The Captain assigns work in terms of tasks and assignments.

Complexity: The work consists of a variety of manual labor and technical duties.
Scope and Effect: The purpose of this position is to perform and supervise a variety of
maintenance functions in the Sheriff’s Office and the Detention Division. Successful
performance helps ensure a safe and sanitary Sheriff’s Office.
Personal Contacts: Contacts are typically with co-workers, inmates, contracting agencies and
other county employees.
Purpose of Contacts: Contacts are typically to give and exchange information, resolve
problems, and provide services.
Physical Demands: Physical strength and ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labor,
including frequent bending, walking, and heavy lifting, for extended periods under dirty and
uncomfortable conditions and in all types of weather as necessary.
Work Environment: The work is typically performed outdoors or in confined areas of the
Sheriff’s Office and Detention Division.
Supervisory and Management Responsibility: Oversees staff and inmates assigned to this
unit.
Basic Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED.
Valid state issued Driver’s License.
Principles of Building Construction Training (Combustible and Non-combustible).
Preferred Qualification:
Advance training in Electrical, Plumbing, and Heating/Air System(s)
Experience in progressively responsible building maintenance and custodial work.
Georgia P.O.S.T. Basic Jail Certification.
