What are the responsibilities and job description for the Correctional Officer position at Newton County Sheriff's Office?
The Newton County Sheriff's Office operates the county jail which holds inmates from all the municipalities within Newton County. Built in 1995, our jail is an 82-bed facility which holds pre-trial detainees as well as sentenced inmates serving up to 1 year in jail. The Corrections Division is supervised by Captain Jerry Hornback with the assistance of Lieutenant Mike Hayes, Sergeant Levi Clark, Sergeant Brandon Barnes, and Sergeant Danielle Norman.
The following requirements for are mandatory:
- No felony convictions, no violent misdemeanor convictions
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
- At least 18 years of age
- Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
- Must meet vision, hearing and physical agility standards (WorkSTEPS®)
- Must possess a valid Missouri driver's license.
- Be able to pass a reference and background investigation, which may include a polygraph/voice stress exam.
- Able to work 12-hour shifts.
Job Duties/Responsibilities:
- Monitors and directs group and individual behavior among the inmates to prevent, control and resolve inmate problems or conflicts.
- Escorts and/or transports inmates to and from various activities within and outside the jail.
- Assists with the inmate admission, classification, and release processes.
- Monitors and directs various inmate programs.
- Provides and summons assistance and aid for inmates while maintaining the safety and security of the facility.
- Dispenses authorized medications and administers first aid and CPR.
- Delivers meals, mail, supplies, etc., to inmates.
- Maintains necessary financial records.
- Collects, maintains, and completes necessary records and reports.
- Searches and observes inmates, visitors, vendors, and others to ensure security.
- Inspects all jail areas to ensure adherence to all jail policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates punctual and reliable attendance in accordance with designated work schedule.
- Complies with applicable safety rules, laws, and practices; uses proper safety equipment and procedures in all operations.
- Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
