The Calculus Project - Summer Teacher Position
Goals:
- To increase the number of Black, Hispanic, Latinx, and low income students enrolled in high-level math courses at the high school
- To deepen mathematical understanding
- To ensure that students are provided with a safe and enriching learning environment in which they can see themselves and affirm their abilities as mathematicians
- To establish high expectations for student learning and performance, including the expectation that students enroll in accelerated or honors math at the high school level
- Expose students to STEM related fields

Who Participates in The Calculus Project?
- Students in grades 8-12. Each grade level cohort contains 30-45 students from across the district.
- Students who identify as Black, Hispanic, Latinx, or low income.
- Students who are demonstrating, or working towards, proficiency in accelerated or honors level math.
- Students and families are selected to participate in the program based on their work ethic and attitude towards school. Students are expected to believe that if they work hard then they can be successful in challenging mathematics classes.
Summer Leader: The summer leader must truly believe in the mission* of the Calculus Project. Leaders must be enthusiastic, well organized, flexible, and have strong communication skills.
Responsibilities:
- Supervise drop off and pick up everyday, including communicating with bus driver about any issues, concerns, or schedule changes
- Check daily attendance and communicate with families about absences
- Distribute, collect, and organize health forms from all students
- Communicate with the nurse on duty at NNHS
- Call parents when students are sick or hurt
- Communicate with all families about program announcements and special events
- Preparing for the first day
- Weekly newsletter
- Highlights of past week
- Reminders of upcoming events
- Field trips and special events
- Closing email
- Plan and run weekly staff meeting with all teachers and counselors
- Follow up with all field trip and activity correspondences and make sure everything goes smoothly (leader is the primary contact for all special events)
- Communicate with teachers about any events coming up
- Fill out permission slips, give to teachers, collect, and follow up with students who have not turned in theirs
- Attend if needed
- Commit to anti-racist practices, including implementing culturally-responsive instruction, ongoing self-assessment of identity and biases, deconstructing harmful norms and standards
- Work with counselor to plan class or whole program activities focused on race, identity, trust, and relationships
- Attend pre-summer staff meeting in June
- Help to supervise breaks and lunch
- Assist and guide teachers with behavior management
- Meet with students
- Communicate with families
Compensation (subject to change with notice):
- The current rate for Summer Leaders is $62 per hour. This is for 6 hours: 5 hours with students and 1 hour of preparatory time.
- 1-2 prep days before the summer (6 hours/day)
Application
- Due by March 1, 2025.
- Once all the applications are received, a committee composed of Calculus Project administrators, High School Math Department Chairs and representatives from the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion meet and read through the applications. All applications will be carefully reviewed and decisions will be made based on the needs of the program, which include a focus on increasing the number of teachers of color and continuing to build on anti-racist practices. Decisions will be communicated to you as soon as possible.
