What are the responsibilities and job description for the NCE Instructor (Adult Program) position at Newton Public Schools - District Wide?

SUMMARY:
NCE Instructors deliver engaging and educational classes and programming to students of all ages. Instructors are responsible for class preparation and planning, teaching, student supervision, attendance and all safety protocols, cleanup, and online meeting hosting if applicable.
Qualifications:

Ability and commitment to abide by all standards and practices detailed in the Kids Instructor Expectations or Adult Instructor Expectations documents

Support NCE’s commitment to inclusion and access by participating in the Financial Assistance Policy

2 years’ experience in the field taught. If a Kids or Teen class, 2 working with children in an educational or recreational setting

Strong expertise and enthusiasm in relevant content area

An inclusive mindset and commitment to engaging all enrolled students regardless of background, level of experience, English language ability, etc.

History of reliability, punctuality, and overall responsibility.

Proficiency in a second language a plus

For online teachers, strong technological competency and online meeting hosting skills are a must
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities (Not Limited To):

Actively work to support NCE’s mission and values

Provide a course description to NCE program coordinator
-
Provide the program coordinator with a syllabus/plan for progressively developing students’ skills over the course of the program. The course should have clear learning objectives and the activities of each lesson should be planned in advance to meet those objectives

Prepare materials necessary for the course and each class, including preparing and garnering approval for a materials budget if applicable. Visuals are important for access for English language learners and students with hearing impairments and should be posted and clear as much as possible

Use intentional activities and language to foster a sense of belonging and community in the classroom. Unless it is explicitly a lecture for adults, classes should have students doing and/or talking the majority of the time.

Ensure students leave with an enriched understanding and sense of enthusiasm for the content area

Supervise students during class and ensure their safety. Enlist NCE site coordinators for assistance as needed. Notify program coordinators of any issues and incidents immediately. (see Expectations documents for details)

Support students with special needs as communicated by NCE office staff

Oversee respectful use of classroom space, including preparing classroom for class and leaving it in good condition

Teach make-up classes as necessitated by weather or unforeseen circumstances

For online instructors, secure everything needed for equipment and technology prior to class

Respond and adjust to NCE staff feedback
