Department : Athletics
Reports To : School Principal
The Athletic Director is responsible for providing leadership to the staff of the Athletic Department. This includes program development, scheduling games and transportation, managing equipment inventory, and preparing the department's annual budget.
Required Qualifications :
- Bachelor's degree
- Proper NIAAA certification (CAA or RAA preferred)
- CPR and AED certification
- Ability to organize and supervise all levels of sports programs
- Capacity to manage a variety of complex and varying issues
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- DESE licensure (Supervisor Director preferred but not required)

Athletic Department Administrative AssistantEquipment ManagersAthletic TrainerEstablish and enforce health and safety procedures in collaboration with the Director of Health Services, district leadership, and building nurses.Collaboration :
Work with the Booster Club to monitor fundraising, support programs, and facilitate school-wide community events.Collaborate with Parks and Recreation on field use, light scheduling, field maintenance, and neighborhood outreach.Communication :
Prepare weekly newsletters for families.Maintain Athletic Department social media accounts and update school monitors with athletic information.Develop and maintain an up-to-date Athletic Handbook outlining policies, procedures, and practices for students and coaches.Training & Development :
Coordinate training for coaches and student-athletes, focusing on :Anti-bullying and anti-hazing
Concussion AwarenessEquity and inclusion initiativesProper behavior for coaches, athletes, caregivers, and spectatorsChemical drug, alcohol, and tobacco useSportsmanshipAcademic expectationsEstablish a leadership program to support team captains and foster leadership among non-captain student-athletes.Monitor a mentoring program for new head coaches.Budgeting & Logistics :
Manage the Athletic Department's annual budget.Conduct strategic assessments of the Athletic Program.Create and deploy end-of-season surveys for student-athletes.Schedule and organize ticket sales, scorekeepers, gym managers, and other event personnel.Scheduling & Supervision :
Coordinate scheduling of practices and games each season.Observe and supervise on-site and off-site practices and games during the school week, weekends, and vacation breaks.Schedule buses, referees, facilities, and other event needs.Ensure proper facility preparation for athletic events.Mediation & Conflict Resolution :
Mediate conflicts involving parents, students, and coaches.Serve as a building administrator and regularly meet with the administrative team.Oversee middle school athletics through the supervision of the Assistant Athletic Director.Program Oversight :
Schedule and lead department, coaches, and parent meetings.Maintain security and oversight for cameras in the Field House and Stadium.Additional Responsibilities :
Coordinate training sessions on topics including equity and inclusion.Implement "other job-related duties" as assigned.Work Environment :
The work environment includes school / classroom settings, athletic fields, and athletic facilities.Noise levels are typically moderate but can vary.Physical Requirements :
Stamina and endurance are to be present from the start of the school day until the last student leaves practice or games in the evening.Frequent walking, standing, sitting, talking, and hearing.Regular bending, stooping, crouching, and kneeling.Occasionally lifting and moving objects up to 25 pounds.Mobility is sufficient to navigate a large school building and nearby athletic facilities.Newton Public Schools is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
