POSITION: School Social Worker – Long Term Substitute
SCHOOL: Newtown Middle School
STARTING DATE: As soon as possible
REMUNERATION: Based on Teacher Contract
REQUIREMENTS: CT Certification #071
Demonstrated experience in school based programs with a strong psycho-
educational background
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide support to middle school in working with students who are in crisis or are at risk due to
emotional, social or family needs
Recognize and intervene appropriately with traumatized children, their families and school staff
Develop collaborative relationships with local community mental health providers
Assist in crisis situations including completion of risk assessments of students, referral to appropriate
agencies and follow-up with the student & family
Assist school team in developing transition plans for students in crisis as they return to school
Make referrals to appropriate outside agencies for families seeking services, and follow-up with
families on an ongoing basis
Connect with parents about supporting the social and emotional development of their children
Help families become aware of services that are available in the community
Participate in discussions with building teams to identify ways of supporting families in need
Facilitate trusting and cooperative relationships between parents, the school, and the community
Empower families to effectively utilize and gain access to educational and community services
Counsel and/or provide social skills instruction to students with IEPs
Participate in the PPT Process
Other responsibilities as determined by supervisor
