Your new role :
The Chief Mate reports directly to the Master and carries out all the Masters lawful orders. As second in command, the Chief Mate is in charge of the vessel in the Masters absence and all crew members are subject to his / her orders concerning vessel operation and maintenance of the vessel.
Assumption of command should the Master become incapacitated.
Identify potential vessel hazards associated with deck operations and advise the Master accordingly.
Stand a wheelhouse watch, when directed by the Master.
Familiarization and training of new Deck personnel.
Planning and execution of all cargo operations, including loading, stowage, discharge, and loading ballast, under the direction of the Master.
Supervise a Cargo Watch, performing cargo operations and PIC duties as required.
The proper keeping of all appropriate cargo and stability records and plans.
Supervision of shore repairs in the absence of a Superintendent in conjunction with the Chief Engineer, as applicable.
The minimum qualifications and experience required are :
Previous experience as a Tugboat Mate or in a similar maritime role is preferred.
Valid U.S. Coast Guard Master of Towing Vessels license endorsed for service.
Must have a valid TWIC (receipts NOT accepted).
A valid passport is highly preferred.
Possess a valid riggers certification from a recognized issuing authority.
Must have a valid DL
Maintain the vessel budget and help maximize cost efficiency as directed
Complete required log entries and maintain radio watch as required
Give assignments and directions to the mate and / or lead deckhand
Ability to meet USCG physical examination requirements.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :
The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required.
Must be able to carry, push / pull and / or lift materials weighing upwards of 75lbs
Walking, stepping, climbing, or otherwise moving from one location on the job site to another, which may be of varying heights and access parameters.
