Provide hands-on care and ensure the welfare of a healthy axolotl colony within a medical device environment. This is an entry-level role focused on mastering essential animal husbandry practices while assisting in critical tasks to support the overall operation of the laboratory animal facility.
Responsibilities
1. Animal Husbandry, Health, & Welfare (~70%) includes health inspections, feeding and environmental maintenance. Daily Health Inspections: to assess health and well-being. Feeding and Nutrition, including preparation and providing appropriate diets according to established protocols. Environmental Maintenance: to maintain clean and suitable living environments by following sanitation schedules and water quality standards. Perform water changes, system cleanings, and other routine maintenance tasks independently. Egg and Juvenile Care: Assist with the care of eggs and juvenile axolotls, including monitoring developmental stages (20%) Breeding Support: Aid senior technicians in the setup and management of breeding protocols, such as pairing animals and monitoring reproductive cycles. Health Interventions: Support medical treatments or interventions under the guidance of supervisors or veterinarians. Monitoring Systems: Assist with system checks, such as monitoring temperature, humidity, and filtration systems. Flag and report any equipment malfunctions or environmental deviations promptly.
2. Facility Administration & Management (10%). Documentation: Maintain accurate records of all animal care activities, including feeding logs, health inspection reports, and breeding records, in accordance with SOPs and related protocols. Reporting: Identify and report deficiencies in equipment or facilities to the Manager of the Animal Facility or other designated personnel. Visitor Policy Adherence: Ensure all visitors comply with the facility's SOP-60 policies for safety and animal welfare.
Qualifications
High School Diploma, GED, or 2 years laboratory and/or animal science experience, or ALAT certification. AA/AS, BA/BS or higher degree will substitute for experience. Reliable transportation and the ability to report on time.
