Engineer III – Transport (In-Building/Venue)
Location: Troy, NY 12180 (Hybrid )
Job Summary:
As a Transport Engineer, you will be part of a dynamic team enabling access to network components, including 5G systems. This role involves technical oversight and engineering design for transport network delivery specific to In-Building and Venue-based projects.
You’ll be focused on expanding our enterprise build plan across dark fiber, next-gen MLS, local ISP, and microwave networks, ensuring seamless integration with our high-performance infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and implement infrastructure for In-Building and Venue transport systems, including DWDM, SONET, and point-to-point/multi-point microwave installations.
- Collaborate with regional markets to support 5G transport design and maintain 4G LTE infrastructure.
- Use internal databases to document fiber assets and design end-to-end circuit paths, including card/port assignments and equipment configurations.
- Develop and manage circuit delivery schedules, coordinating with vendors to meet project deadlines.
- Monitor network performance using utilization reports and propose design changes to optimize fronthaul, backhaul, and microwave networks.
- Partner with Network Planning on strategic initiatives and future technology planning.
- Ensure cross-functional collaboration with other network teams to meet project objectives.
- Track and manage capital expenditures in line with project timelines.
- Complete engineering milestones using systems such as Conquest, Granite, and FUZE.
- Provide IP assignment support and transport technical expertise.
Must-Have Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience (8 years).
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in telecommunications or transport engineering.
- Prior experience with Wireless or One Fiber projects.
- Strong background in construction and transport management.
- Proficient with LEC ASR systems and Telcordia Granite (formerly Xpercom/XNG).
- Hands-on experience with Ethernet, T1, DS1, DS3, and SONET technologies.
- Proficiency in MS Office applications: Excel, Word, Visio, PowerPoint, and Access.
- Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Telecommunications, Engineering, or a related field.
- Strong analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to balance technical and business requirements.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize, delegate, and follow up effectively.
- Adaptable and able to operate in high-pressure or ambiguous situations.
- Creative and solutions-oriented, with the flexibility to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights/weekends as needed.
- Solid understanding of Layer 1, 2, and 3 networking principles.
- Experience with platforms/technologies such as:
- Nokia/ALU SR1, SR7, a8
- Fujitsu FW9500, FW4100
- Ciena 6500
- Familiarity with network management tools such as Navis INC, ALU 5620 SAM.
- Experience with project management platforms: Siterra, Sitetracker, FUZE, etc.
Work Location & Logistics:
This is a hybrid position, based at a Verizon Hub location.
Remote work is allowed on assigned days; in-office presence will be determined by your manager.
