Technician-Systems Engineer III – Newport News, VA-
(Onsite – 5 days per week)
Work Schedule: Willingness to work nights occasionally
Role Overview:
As a Network Performance Engineer, you will be responsible for the advanced installation, operation, and maintenance of switching, data communications, and peripheral equipment associated with the Mobile Switching Center (MSC). You will work on multi-functional projects alongside highly skilled team members to drive positive business impact.
Key Responsibilities:
- Coordinate installation, testing, and troubleshooting of voice and data network platforms and transmission facilities (e.g., dark and lit fiber services, Gigabit Ethernet Services, OCn, T3, T1, DS0).
- Maintain system applications using traffic and capacity monitoring tools to track errors and optimize network performance.
- Monitor Building Automated Systems (BAS) to maintain operations of network equipment (e.g., AC/DC power systems, HVAC systems).
- Ensure a secure operating environment for vendor safety and network integrity.
- Update daily logs with site-specific information to track network changes.
- Compose reports for system documentation, ensuring compliance with environmental and safety standards.
- Assist with cell site build programs and switch inventory management.
- Identify and implement process improvements or automation opportunities.
Required Qualifications:
- Associate's degree or 2 years of work experience.
- 5 years of relevant experience.
- Ability to meet physical requirements with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Experience with wireless networks.
- Certifications such as CCNA, CCNP, JNCIA, or NRS.
- Experience with automation/scripting (e.g., Python, Ansible).
- Knowledge of LAN/WAN switching and IP routing protocols.
- Proficiency in using electronic test equipment.
- Knowledge of transmission facilities (e.g., OCn, 10G, OC48, T3, T1, DS0).
- Experience with Linux operating systems and telecommunications networking.
- Familiarity with DC power rectification and battery systems.
- Experience with Ericsson, Samsung, Ciena, or Nokia equipment.
- Strong project management skills.
Must-Have Skills:
- Support for capital projects (eNSE Router Migrations, Bandwidth Upgrades).
- Ability to perform software upgrades on routers and equipment.
- Proficiency in monitoring and troubleshooting circuit issues.
