Job Duties
General Statement of Duties : To assist in the preservation, management, and public access of information resources. Under general supervision, this individual is responsible for a variety of public service duties in various phases of library operations, primarily in the Serials department. This job requires knowledge of library principles, practices, and procedures. Responsibilities include interpreting policies, providing public service, and working with vendors regarding subscriptions and renewals of library resources.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
This position assists the Ellender Memorial Library through operating its Serials Department, managing serial publications in print and electronic formats. Duties include :
- Opening the Serials department following established procedures.
- Processing journal, newspaper, and magazine publications according to Library procedures, including data entry into the digital library system.
- Attending to patrons’ needs in a timely and courteous manner, providing specialized research assistance, detailed information on library services, and instructing patrons in the use of library systems.
- Maintaining working knowledge of integrated library systems to modify records and resolve complex problems.
- Editing problematic bibliographic entries for online automated systems using accepted library standards.
- Coordinating bindery or restoration and repair activities.
- Coordinating library mail in a timely manner.
- Monitoring and ensuring accuracy and consistency of information in the Library’s databases.
- Assessing and shifting shelved print materials as necessary.
- Claiming issues from vendors for newspaper subscriptions.
- Completing special project work as assigned.
- Creating and maintaining procedural documentation for departmental operations.
- Maintaining departmental supply inventory and usage statistics.
Trains, supervises, and evaluates student employees, including approving timesheets.
Other duties as assigned, including serving as backup in other departments and participating in library programs.
Special Working Conditions / Physical Requirements :
Physical demands may include frequent bending, moving, lifting, kneeling, and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds; pushing and pulling weighted carts; long periods of sitting or moving around; shelving and shifting materials at various height levels.
Minimum Experience Required :
Three years of experience in which clerical work was a major duty, two years of which must have been in clerical library work. Substitutions apply for training and education.
