Nichols Contracting, Inc. (NCI) is a family-owned and operated Construction and Contracting business headquartered in Columbia, MD with offices in Venice, Royal Palm Beach, and Orlando, FL, and a team of 170 employees. NCI is a full-service general contractor focused on providing premier services in all aspects of the construction process, from concept to completion. We manage a broad range of commercial construction projects, including new construction, tenant fit outs, and renovations. NCI services a diverse group of markets including federal, state, and local governments, as well as a variety of corporate and special industry organizations that require complex life safety and critical infrastructure needs.
The Safety Manager will oversee and enhance safety initiatives across all Nichols project sites. This role includes implementing and monitoring the Corporate Safety Plan, ensuring OSHA and regulatory compliance, minimizing risks, and leading safety training programs. The Safety Manager will work closely with project managers, superintendents, and subcontractors to ensure a culture of safety and risk mitigation.
Essential Functions:
- Participate as a member of the Nichols Safety and Accident Committee
- Provide field observations and recommendations on corporate safety policies and the Corporate Safety Plan.
- Collaborate with superintendents and project managers to develop Job-Specific Safety Plans.
- Prepare Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs) based on work requirements.
- Utilize software tools to prepare safety audits, track observations to resolutions, and monitor Nichols’ personnel safety training records.
- Implement and maintain accurate record-keeping practices, including project safety files and logs.
- Identify opportunities to prevent injuries, enhance safety performance, and reduce insurance costs.
- Assist with claims handling, perform injury and accident investigations, and prepare related reports.
- Support the return-to-work process for injured employees, monitoring progress during modified duty assignments
- Conduct safety audits and ensure compliance with OSHA and other regulatory requirements.
- Provide guidance to resolve hazardous conditions and mitigate risks.
- Assist in OSHA inspections and confirm subcontractor insurance certificate compliance.
- Provide daily field audit reports and corrective action recommendations to project personnel and the VP of Construction.
- Collaborate with the project team to preplan work areas and address potential safety concerns proactively.
- Ensure proper implementation of the SDS communication program and maintain adequate supplies of safety signs and equipment on project sites.
- Develop and deliver safety-training programs for Nichols employees and subcontractors.
- Assist in scheduling and logistics for training programs and maintain records of employee certifications.
- Participate in weekly Nichols and subcontractor foreman meetings, safety meetings, and preparatory meetings as needed.
- Provide technical advice on safety matters to project supervisory teams.
- Follow up with subcontractor safety representatives to ensure all safety concerns are addressed and resolved.
- Oversee the annual respiratory protection program requirements.
- Must be present at the project site and have full mobility and reasonable access to all major work operations during the shift
- Requires a G.E.D. or High School Diploma
- Five (5) years of continuous construction industry safety experience in supervising/ managing general construction (managing safety programs or processes or conducting hazard analyses and developing controls)
- Must have an OSHA 30 Certificate/card
- Experience working with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations and USACE EM385-1-1 Safety & Health Standards
- Current certifications in First Aid and CPR
- Must have strong interpersonal and writing skills and be a problem solver
- Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook) experience is required
- Possess or have the ability to obtain a DOD SECRET CLEARANCE
- Must have a First Aid/CPR Certification
- Preferred candidate will be bi-lingual, speaking both English and Spanish
- Preferred candidate will have a degree in Safety and Health or a related field

Salary range: $90K-110K plus performance-based Bonus incentives
