PRIMARY PURPOSE:
To provide support and assistance for services to visually impaired students and their teachers as they create a secure, world class learning environment that meets the social, emotional, and educational needs of the visually impaired student.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
High School Diploma or GED, required
Associate degree or a minimum of 48 college hours, required
Paraprofessional Certification, required
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Good interpersonal skills
Reading and writing skills in Braille, required
Experience:
One (1) year of experience working with children, preferably those with visual impairments, preferred
Working Days: 187
Hourly Pay Range:
Minimum: $14.85
Maximum: $20.71
Note: Starting pay for a new hire in a pay range plan will be determined individually based on each person's job-related experience and salaries paid to peer employees in the same position with similar experience.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Assist teachers in planning and preparation of instructional materials for visually impaired students.
2. Under supervision of the teacher, work with students with visual impairments to reinforce material initially introduced by the teacher.
3. Reinforce skills taught by the Orientation and Mobility instructor.
4. Assist in use and maintenance of assistive technology.
5. Participate in staff development.
6. Maintain confidentiality.
7. Keep the supervising teacher and coordinator for Special Education informed regarding the status on all projects/services undertaken and of directives or requests received internally or externally.
8. Follow McAllen ISD customer service standards.
9. Perform other duties assigned by immediate supervisor (primary evaluator).
