Assistant Academic Advisor
Starting Rate: $15.00 per hour
Preferred qualifications:
- High school diploma plus at least 30 college credit hours.
- At least five years successful experience in education, social services, or customer service.
- Demonstrated ability to interact positively with students, staff, business community and other adults.
- Demonstrated proficiency in managing electronic resources.
Performance responsibilities:
- Assist the Academic Advisor in helping students through the enrollment process:
- Provide a welcoming reception for new students through genuine interest in their personal goals, caring, patience, active listening, empathy and understanding.
- Completion of Adult Learning Plans, assessments, and class schedules.
- Request and evaluate students’ previous transcripts.
- Identify barriers to participation and identification of referrals and resources to overcome those barriers.
- Assist students with identifying academic and career goals. Advise students on options for completion of high school diploma or GED.
- Provide effective orientation to program options, processes and procedures, assistance available, requirements and expectations, etc.
- Support regular outreach efforts to students through social media, phone calls, direct mail, etc. to encourage their persistence toward their educational goals and help them problem solve barriers to participation.
- Manage electronic resources specific to the Adult Education program, including documentation, implementation, student assistance, and support of Google Apps, Learning Management Services, and secure testing applications. Ensure compliance of GED test site requirements.
- Maintain regular communication with instructors and support staff about students’ progress, challenges, and needs. Make adjustments to student schedules as needed.
- Assist the Academic Advisor in providing students support and career guidance for advancement to post-secondary education and/or employment. Coordinate with representatives from local colleges, the Educational Opportunity Center, and Michigan Works to provide assistance with college enrollment information and processes such as applications, financial aid, and assessments.
- Work with the Academic Advisor and classroom Instructional Assistant to ensure complete and accurate maintenance and reporting of student records in office files, forms, MAERS system, etc.
- Work with supervisor, Academic Advisor and other staff to maximize achievement of program performance measures related to recruitment/enrollment, fall and winter counts, retention, EFL gains, post-testing, academic goal completion, and adult student follow-up.
- Assist with the coordination all required assessments and testing.
- Respond to requests for program information in a timely manner.
- Attend state and local professional development workshops and trainings as needed. Attend monthly BCCEA meetings and quarterly Region 8 meetings.
- Assist with the coordination of the nontraditional programs graduation ceremony.
- Coordinate with staff members of other district programs regarding the transfer of students among programs.
- Other duties as directed by the Adult Education Supervisor or Academic Advisor.
