GENERAL SUMMARYThe Dentist performs clinical dental services for clients which include examinations and treatment planning, oral cancer screenings, amalgam and composite restorations, pit and fissure sealants, bonded restorations, extractions, root canal therapy, minor oral surgery, periodontal treatments, full and partial denture construction, fixed prosthodontics, and other required procedures in the scope of general family dentistry.

This position ensures confidentiality, security, and accuracy of records, and promotes positive employee, customer, and community relations. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required and outstanding customer service to fellow employees, customers, vendors, etc. is expected. Regular attendance is required, later hours or weekend time may be required, and a neat well-groomed professional appearance is essential at all times.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Evaluates patients, performing examinations to determine the nature of condition, utilizing x-rays, dental instruments, and other diagnostic procedures.
  • Diagnoses and treat diseases, injuries, and malformations of teeth and gums and related oral structures.
  • Provides dental services, including cleanings, fillings, extractions, and replacement of teeth, using rotary and hand instruments, dental appliances, medications, and surgical implements.
  • Provides preventive dental services to patients, such as applications of fluoride and sealants to teeth.
  • Instructs clients in proper practices of dental hygiene and in procedures pertinent to provided treatments.
  • Performs related duties and other tasks as required, most especially outreach and patient education.
  • Provides comprehensive, culturally appropriate oral health care holistically centered with emphasis on team and patient positive experience. Embraces minimally invasive dentistry philosophy.
  • Provides in-service training to staff. Participates in specialty clinics collaboratively with other members in planning to the health needs and complaints of clients and patients.
  • Assists the Executive Director in maintaining strong collaboration and communication relative to overall operation of the dental clinic.
  • Coordinates referral of services to dental specialists for treatment that cannot be provided within the scope of the Nisqually Generations Healing Center.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • Graduate of an accredited dental school with a DDS or DMD degree.
  • Possess unrestricted license to practice dentistry in Washington State.
  • Current CPR (BLS) certifications.
  • NPI and DEA registrations.
  • At least five (5) years' experience in dental practice is preferred.
  • Previous community clinic and / or IHS dental experience is preferred.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's license and maintain a driving record that meets the minimum requirements established by Nisqually Indian Tribes vehicle insurance provider.
  • Successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.
  • The ability to work with vulnerable populations including adults and children.
  • Must pass a State and National (FBI) criminal history background check prior to employment.
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of the Nisqually Indian Tribe's history, customs, traditions, and ability to demonstrate cultural sensitivity.
  • Experience working with Federally Recognized Tribes.
  • SUPERVISION

    This position will train, supervise, and evaluate all dental staff.

    COMPETENCIES

  • Information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities. This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures.
  • All applicable federal and state laws related to dentistry and public health.
  • Principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Tribal, Federal, and state laws, codes, and regulations.
  • HIPAA and PHI requirements. Knowledge and adherence to state (RCW, WAC) and federal confidentiality regulations (42 CFR part 2)
  • Common office and administrative procedures.
  • Trauma and its impact on wellness and recovery.
  • Skilled in :

  • Operating a personal computer and standard office programs and equipment.
  • Organizational management practices.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Commitment to providing excellent customer service.
  • Motivational interviewing (MI) skills or a desire to learn MI.
  • Ability to :

  • Work in a computer-based environment, especially Microsoft Windows.
  • Work in a cross-cultural environment and understand the social and cultural contexts of patients.
  • Prioritize multiple tasks amidst frequent interruptions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, staff, and external agencies.
  • Maintain personal, professional, and ethical boundaries.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a team member to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands; handle; feel; or grip objects, stretch and / or reach with hands and arms; stoop; crouch or work in cramped or awkward positions; repetitive motions. This person may regularly lift and / or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust to focus.
