Program: Water Resource Management – Division of Water Monitoring, Standards, and Pesticide Control – Bureau of Environmental Analysis, Restoration and Standards
Program Description: The Division of Water Monitoring Standards and Pesticide Control regulates pesticides and assesses New Jersey's waters to protect and manage public drinking water supplies, recreational uses, shellfish harvesting, and the health of aquatic organisms, in accordance with State and Federal regulations.
The Bureau of Environmental Analysis, Restoration and Standards (BEARS) conducts and coordinates water quality analysis and restoration, surface and ground water quality standards development, and environmental stewardship to protect, maintain, and enhance water quality for all waters of the State in accordance with the Federal Clean Water Act, New Jersey Water Pollution Control Act, and New Jersey Water Quality Planning Act.
Project Description: BEARS is updating the “Surface Water Quality Standards Classification of New Jersey” GIS layer to be consistent with recently released National Hydrography Datasets. All stream names in the updated layers follow the national Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). BEARS is also working with the Bureau of Freshwater Fisheries in a review of waterbodies eligible for trout-related reclassifications. As part of this effort, the intern will assist in cataloging changes in stream names, updates to antidegradation designations, and updates to trout classifications. The intern will work closely with the project team to review draft GIS feature layers. This work will also require consultation of historical records of the SWQS rule at N.J.A.C. 7:9B. The completed log, based on the intern’s work, would then be used in SWQS rule development.
Specific to the Position: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, ArcGIS. Good writing skills preferred.
Preferred Area of Study: A major relating to the physical, biological, or environmental sciences, or environmental policy.
License: Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Residency: All persons newly hired on or after September 1, 2011 have one year from the date of employment to establish, and then maintain principal residence in the State of New Jersey subject to the provisions of N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L.2011, Chapter 70), also known as the "New Jersey First Act".
Authorization to Work: Selected candidates must be authorized to work in the United States per the Department of Homeland Security, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations. Note: The State of New Jersey does not provide sponsorship for citizenship to the United States.
