Surgical Recovery Specialist - Tissue Team Lead

Status: Full-Time Position

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs all functions of a Surgical Recovery Specialist – Tissue.
  • Communicates and collaborates with the Directors, Managers, Donation Resource Center, and Clinical Administrator On Call, as necessary.
  • Follows all regulatory requirements, standards, and policies and procedures set forth by FDA, AATB, and NJ Sharing Network and any other regulatory or accrediting agency.
  • Responsible for the case from the time the case is received, completing and documenting the medical record review, physical assessment and site assessment.
  • Functions as a Team Lead, ensuring the team complies with all best practices, assigning duties for the case as needed, reports any concerns to Manager/CAOC in real time.
  • Prepares the operating room for recovery.  Provides necessary supplies in sufficient quantities, ensures sterile technique is followed pre and post recovery and is accountable for equipment retrieval.
  • Prepares, moves and/or lifts donor to and from the OR table for bone, soft tissue, skin, heart valve and saphenous vein recovery.  Assesses donor’s tissue for suitability and communicates effectively to the tissue processors with any concerns/finding.
  • Prepares back table with required containers and packaging, Receives and cultures tissue. Packages tissue per processor SOP’s. Able to perform all back table responsibilities.
  • Accurately completes surgical recovery of all tissues following tissue processor SOP’s.
  • Assists in post mortem care.  Responsible for cleaning of operating room after surgical recovery is completed. 
  • Returns supplies to the appropriate location upon returning of the office and performs post case responsibilities.
  • Performs office duties as assigned which may include but not be limited to preparing trays for sterilization, disposal of medical waste and courier functions.
  • May perform triage responsibilities such as assessing donation and transportation related needs for the department and allocates staff and resources appropriately. Equitably distributes assignments.
  • Attends mandatory full staff, clinical and team meetings to facilitate development and implementation of successful best practices.
  • Precepts both new staff and current staff on new skills.
  • May be cross trained in other areas as needed.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

Education and Experience: 

  • High School degree or equivalent is required.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in tissue surgical recovery is required.  
  • Certified Tissue Bank Specialist (CTBS) is preferred and strongly encouraged.
