Summary: Reporting directly to Principal Instructor – designs and develops course curricula and training scenarios and serves as Instructor for PTC Simulator Training.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Deliver PTC Simulator Training: Conduct and facilitate Positive Train Control (PTC) Simulator training sessions for both trainees and current rail employees, ensuring effective delivery and comprehension.
- Collaborate with New Instructors and Mentors: Work closely with new instructors and mentors to deliver PTC training, handling responsibilities such as scheduling, session preparation, and communication with all relevant stakeholders.
- Develop Technical Proficiency and Support: Gain comprehensive technical expertise in operating, maintaining, supporting, troubleshooting, and repairing all PTC simulator equipment, providing necessary support to external technicians. Regularly monitor simulator safety and performance to ensure operational readiness.
- Demonstrate and Train in Technical Operations: Demonstrate technical aspects of simulator operations and coach staff across functions, providing cross-training to prevent downtime in the Simulation Center due to absences or vacancies.
- Collaborate on Curriculum Development: Partner with the RTD’s Instructional Design & Development Team (IDD) to assess, update, and improve training syllabi and materials, aligning with strategic learning goals.
- Evaluate Training Effectiveness: Assess training programs and analyze trainee performance data to identify any skill gaps or necessary improvements. Provide additional training to address these areas, ensuring trainees achieve successful outcomes.
- Review and Enhance External Training Programs: Evaluate and refine training programs created by equipment manufacturers and external consultants to enhance or develop new course materials.
- Ensure FRA Compliance: Collaborate with the CFR-243 Compliance Specialist to ensure training programs meet Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) requirements.
- Maintain Training Records and Updates: Keep detailed records of training sessions, including attendance and curriculum updates, and coordinate necessary changes to the curriculum.
- Perform other duties as assigned or directed.
Education, Experience, and Qualifications:
Minimum:
- Associate Degree in Liberal Arts, Business Administration, Vocational Education, or related area from a U.S. Department of Education accredited college or university.
- Plus three (3) years of experience in rail training, rail management, rail transportation, technical program facilitation, or direct experience in simulator training - respective to job offering.
- Any relevant combination of experience and education may be substituted for the educational requirement.
Preferred:
- Experience in the design, development, presentation, and evaluation of transportation technical skills and/or management development training programs desired.
Knowledge and Skills:
Essential:
- Proven ability to effectively supervise, coach, motivate, and mentor students.
- Demonstrated teamwork, adept communication abilities, and the capacity to forge successful business alliances with diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to demonstrate subject matter expertise in technical knowledge required based on the assignment.
- Strong presentation, written, and verbal skills are required.
- Skill/ability to instruct in a classroom, field, and remote (distance learning) environment.
- Established proficiency with technology including Microsoft Office tools (i.e., Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Teams.)
- Exhibits punctuality and exceptional organizational skills to ensure efficiency and reliability in all tasks.
Preferred:
- Ability to consistently recognize opportunities for improvement and development, ability to execute on new ideas to improve training programs desired.
- Experience using PTC Simulators, Smart Board technology, Cornerstone, or other Learning Management Systems (LMS).
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Appropriate certification (e.g., NORAC/DSLE/Engineering License) is required based on the assignment.
- Designated Supervisor of Locomotive Engineers (DSLE) required.
Working Environment
- In person/Office/Remote/Field
Physical Demands
- Ability to work on computer both remotely and office environment.
- Ability to stand during in-person training sessions as needed to evaluate Trainees.
- Ability to climb onto all types of locomotive cars to evaluate Trainees during field work exercises.
- Ability to walk track distance (approx. 1 mile) during field training to observe Instructors/Trainees during field training exercises.
Other Conditions
- Flexibility to work as needed including evenings and weekends.
- Travel may be required to vendor locations for factory acceptance testing or presentations on behalf of organization.
