About the Internship
nLIGHT is currently recruiting for an Engineering student to intern with us for the summer of 2025. This internship is a 10 to 12-week program that offers challenging assignments, projects, and career development opportunities to enhance your professional growth. nLIGHT’s Product Engineering Team
The Product Engineering team is responsible for understanding customer requirements and working with Product Development Engineering to provide suitable laser-based configuration.
What You Can Expect to Learn
- Methodical problem-solving methods including techniques such as root cause analysis, DMAIC, fishbone or “5 Whys”
- Data-analysis and decision-making skills based upon test results to determine next course of action within defined projects
- In-depth training on the design, assembly and operation of single-emitter based laser diode products
- Understanding and experience with manual, semi-automated and fully automated capital equipment utilized in engineering and high-volume production environments
- Experience working within a world leader in semiconductor lasers with exposure to cross-functional groups including engineering, manufacturing and sales
What You Can Expect to Do
- Perform in-depth investigations on specific product failures by generating and executing project Failure Analysis plans
- Generate reports on customer returned modules based upon failure analysis and work with Process Engineering and Production to implement improvement actions when required
- Assist with research, testing and data analysis
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical product failures
- Work hands-on on operation and laser-based products using power supplies, detectors, etc.
Who You Are
- You bring Knowledge of engineering principles and theories with a background in optics or lasers preferred
- You have strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- You have excellent verbal and written communication skills
- You take initiative and have an eagerness to learn
Minimum Job Requirements
- You must be working towards a degree in Engineering or Physics
- You must have completed (at a minimum) your sophomore year in college
- You must have an overall GPA of 3.0 or above to be considered
Intern Social Events
This summer we are bringing on five to six interns and want to ensure the time is well spent on and off the clock. That said, our interns can expect adventures in the PNW, board game nights at local breweries/coffee shops, Happy Hour networking events with Senior Leadership, and much more!

Compensation and Benefits
Pay depends on level of education completed:
- $26 - 28/hr
