Job Summary:
The Peer Support Worker provides individualized, strengths-based support to individuals experiencing behavioral health challenges. Using lived experience and specialized training, the Peer Support Worker assists clients in developing skills to enhance independent living, learning, working, socializing, and recreation. This role focuses on empowerment, advocacy, mentorship, and connection to community resources to support clients in their recovery journey.
Key Responsibilities:
- Independent Living & Daily Skills Support
- Assist clients in developing and strengthening independent living skills, including self-care, hygiene, budgeting, meal planning, and household management.
- Provide coaching and encouragement to foster self-sufficiency in daily life.
- Community & Social Support
- Support clients in identifying and participating in community-based activities to build social networks and reduce isolation.
- Facilitate group discussions or activities that promote peer connection, personal growth, and resilience.
- Employment & Education Assistance
- Guide clients in exploring vocational and educational opportunities, assisting with applications, resumes, and interview preparation.
- Help clients develop workplace and academic skills to enhance success.
- Service Coordination & Navigation
- Assist clients in identifying and accessing necessary services, including medical, behavioral health, housing, financial, and legal resources.
- Provide advocacy and support during service appointments, ensuring clients' voices are heard and respected.
- Crisis Support & Intervention
- Offer immediate peer support during times of crisis, using de-escalation techniques and connecting clients to emergency resources as needed.
- Work collaboratively with crisis response teams, therapists, and medical providers to stabilize and support clients.
- Empowerment & Self-Advocacy
- Encourage clients to take an active role in their recovery by fostering self-advocacy and informed decision-making.
- Provide mentorship and guidance based on personal lived experience.
- Skill-Building & Wellness Coaching
- Educate clients on coping strategies, emotional regulation, and wellness practices to improve mental and physical well-being.
- Assist in developing individualized recovery plans with measurable goals.
- Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all client interactions and progress notes in accordance with agency and regulatory guidelines.
- Ensure confidentiality and ethical standards in all client interactions.
Qualifications:
- Required: Certification in Peer Support
- Lived experience with mental health, substance use, or related recovery process.
- Strong understanding of recovery principles and the ability to model positive coping strategies.
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations and foster a supportive, nonjudgmental environment.
- Computer and documentation skills for record-keeping.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation preferred.
Preferred Experience:
- Experience working in community-based mental health, behavioral health, or peer support roles.
- Knowledge of Medicaid, Medicare, and community health resources.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred but not required.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $15.00 - $25.00 per hour
