Position Title: Varsity Head Coach-Track and Field
Reports to: Athletic Director
Service Area: Santa Fe, NM
Employment Term: Part-time.
Salary/Wage Range: Depends on qualifications and experience.
Summary
The head coach must have a good knowledge of the sports, be able to communicate with athletes clearly and effectively, enthusiastically and successfully recruit athletes for the particular sport, and have a good rapport with students.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned)
Competencies: To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies:
Communicates with student-athletes clearly and effectively.- Enthusiastically and successfully recruits student-athletes.
- Conducts regular practice sessions for one and one-half hours on weekdays throughout the season (except with permission of the Athletic Director to cancel a particular practice session).
- Teach philosophy and fundamental skills associated with sport to student-athletes.
- Accompany and supervise student-athletes at sporting events at NMSD and throughout the state and country.
- Provide direct supervision of student-athletes in vehicles, locker rooms, gyms, playing fields, dining rooms, and cottages during practices and participation.
- Attending all meetings required by the Athletic Director.
- Supervise and instruct student-athletes and managers in caring for and storing equipment and supplies; maintaining lockers, showers, and supply rooms; washing towels, and uniforms; keeping scores and statistics; and securing personal items.
- Control key and building security including checking out keys and returning them at the end of the season; securing all doors; and turning out lights at the completion of practice or event.
- Provide the Athletic Director with up-to-date rosters and eligibility lists at the beginning of the practice session and at any time the roster changes.
- Consult with the Athletic Director prior to suspending or dismissing any student-athlete from the team.
- Inform and assist the Athletic Director in all practice scheduling, team meetings, and game scheduling.
- Stress good sportsmanship, safety, and the values of athletics, positive community relations, and a positive image of the school to students, staff, and opponents.
- Care for injured students on the NMSD campus by sending them immediately to the Health Center.
- During an away game, the Head Coach is responsible for taking an injured athlete to the emergency room and notifying the Athletic Director and the athlete’s parent(s) and/or guardian(s)
- Report any hazardous situation(s) to the Athletic Director in a timely manner.
- Become familiar with the NMAA manual bylaws and comply with all NMSD policies and procedures.
- Be responsible for reporting game results to the appropriate newspaper.
- Submit player rosters to the Athletic Director
- Submit practice plan, statistics in max preps, award summaries, recap summaries events, e.g., Great Plains School for the Deaf tournaments, State Championships, and National Deaf Interscholastic Athletic Association “NDIAA” sports events.
- Coaches must drive the state vehicle to away games if there are no bus drivers.
Qualifications: Superior knowledge of Track and Field, experience in coaching or teaching, and understanding of the student-athletes' commitment to academics.
Education and/or Experience: associate or bachelor’s degree preferred. Coaching experience in working with K-12
Certificates and Licenses: Must possess a New Mexico Athletic Coach (7-12) License with the New Mexico Public Education Department, Certification in First aid and CPR, and Certification in defensive driving.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is required to stand, walk, and sit for more than 6 hours a day while teaching classes, and use hands to sign, handle papers, and write on the board.
