Role: Datacenter Technician
Location: Gallatin, Tennessee
Key Responsibilities:
- Cabling & Termination:
- Install and mount equipment such as racks, patch panels, fiber optic cables, and hardware.
- Perform grounding installation for racks and cables as required.
- Test cables for continuity, troubleshooting common issues like shorts or miswiring.
- Install various types of fiber optic connectors (LC, SC, ST, etc.) for both multi-mode and single-mode fiber.
- Terminate different types of fiber, including simplex and duplex jumper cords, and outside plant fiber.
- Calculate loss budgets for fiber optic connections in compliance with industry standards (TIA/EIA).
- Testing & Troubleshooting:
- Conduct testing using tools like OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer), Fluke testers, and EFXO.
- Troubleshoot and identify problems using the OTDR to detect faults in the fiber network.
- Perform mechanical and fusion splicing of fiber cables and ensure connections are stable and reliable.
- Splicing:
- Handle both mechanical and fusion splicing tasks on various types of fiber cables.
- Work on building entrance splices, maintenance spaces, and direct buried splices.
- Administrative Tasks:
- Complete paperwork such as timesheets, material transfers, work orders, and tool transfers accurately and on time.
- Other Duties:
- Be available for on-call support after business hours and potentially travel to different sites when needed.
Physical & Mental Requirements:
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work at heights or off ladders, in confined spaces, and lift up to 50 pounds, with the ability to move up to 75 pounds.
- Must be able to distinguish colors, read small print, and hear sounds like dial tones.
- Mental Requirements:
- Self-motivated, positive attitude, and proactive in problem-solving.
- Strong communication skills to work effectively with customers and colleagues.
- Ability to read, write, and give oral presentations.
Educational & Certification Requirements:
- Basic Education:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Skills & Experience:
- Proficiency in terminating all types of fiber connectors and systems, including multi-mode and single-mode fiber.
- Experience with testing and troubleshooting fiber systems (OTDR, PMLS).
- Preferably 3-5 years of experience in fiber optics.
- Industry certifications (Corning, FOA, BICSI) are preferred.
- Experience working in a data center, mechanical and fusion splicing, and OSP (Outside Plant) or confined space entry would be an asset.
- Tools Proficiency:
- Familiarity with various tools required for the job, such as screwdrivers, pliers, cable strippers, tone sets, and crimping tools.
