The Upfit Mechanic at Nomad GCS is instrumental in both supporting the upfitting of upcoming customer builds and maintaining our internal demo fleet. This includes working on specialty vehicles outfitted with communications technology, power systems, and mission-specific upgrades. You'll take direct guidance from a Senior Mechanic but are expected to bring a proactive attitude, take initiative on assigned work, and contribute to a high-performance team environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / RESPONSIBILITY:
• Perform mechanical installations and modifications for customer vehicle upfits, including lift kits, suspension systems, wheels/tires, and underbody protection.
• Support maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting for Nomad’s internal demo fleet.
• Assist with vehicle preparation and upfitting during active production cycles.
• Follow detailed work orders and direction from a Senior Mechanic, while proactively contributing to task completion and shop efficiency.
• Ensure all mechanical and upfit work aligns with Nomad’s safety, durability, and performance standards.
• Operate hand and power tools, lifts, and shop equipment in a safe and effective manner.
• Maintain accurate records of work completed, parts used, and any changes or issues encountered.
• Keep workspaces clean, organized, and compliant with safety standards.
• Support final quality inspections and assist with adjustments or finishing work as needed.
• Take on additional duties as assigned.
BASIC KNOWLEDGE DESIRED:
• Solid understanding of vehicle systems including suspension, drivetrain, wheels/tires, and basic electrical components.
• Familiarity with custom builds, upfitting, fabrication, and specialty/commercial vehicle platforms.
• Basic knowledge of welding, electrical systems, or fabrication techniques is a plus.
• Proficient in using automotive and mechanical tools, lift equipment, and general shop resources.
• Awareness of workplace safety practices and a commitment to maintaining a clean and efficient environment.
• Demonstrate understanding and application of Nomad Core Values.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
• Regular use of hands and arms to manipulate, handle, feel, reach, or operate objects, tools, or controls.
• Frequent standing, walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, sitting, and crawling.
• Frequently lift/move up to 50 pounds. Assistance required for anything heavier than 50 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus and distinguish colors.
• Must have the physical stamina to work in awkward positions and stand for prolonged periods.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
• Partially environmentally controlled indoor area with temperatures fluctuating between 60°F and 100°F, typically maintained around 70°F.
• Occasional outdoor work required.
• Exposure to noise levels ranging from low to loud; safety hearing devices provided as needed.
• Possible exposure to household and commercial chemicals; adherence to safety protocols outlined in Safety Data Sheets (SDS) required.
• Mandatory wearing of OSHA-approved safety eyewear and closed-toed shoes at all times on the production floor.
• Use of additional personal protective equipment (PPE), such as respirators or protective coveralls, may be necessary for specific tasks.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in automotive or mechanical roles.
• Experience in upfitting, fabrication, or working on custom or specialty vehicles preferred.
• Technical training, certifications, or ASE credentials are a plus.
• Strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and ability to complete tasks with minimal supervision.
• Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required.
• Ability to take direction while demonstrating initiative and reliability in a team environment.
