Position overview
A leading DC area trade association in the consumer products industry seeks a Government Affairs Specialist to support policy and advocacy initiatives. This role provides an opportunity to develop and maintain strong relationships with government representatives and stakeholders while advancing the policy goals of the industry. The position reports to the Vice President of Government Affairs & General Counsel and works closely with the Chief Scientist.
What you'll do:
- Monitor, review, and analyze legislative and regulatory developments for relevance and impact on the industry.
- Serve as a point of contact for relevant association committees.
- Communicate policy updates to members through written summaries and reports.
- Attend and report on meetings with legislators, government agencies, stakeholders, and industry coalitions.
- Draft and develop meeting materials, summaries, and compliance tools for members.
- Assist in planning and organizing advocacy events, including the association’s Lobby Day.
- Contribute to legislative and regulatory content for the association’s website, newsletter, and other materials.
- Travel to association events and member locations as needed.
What you'll need to succeed (requirements)
- Bachelor’s degree with the ability to learn and advocate on behalf of technical industries.
- 3 years of experience in an association, lobbying firm, or corporate government relations office; Capitol Hill and/or state legislative experience.
- Understanding of the U.S. regulatory system; familiarity with EPA and/or FDA is valued, as well as experience in health and safety policy.
- Strong responsiveness and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks effectively.
- Dedication to member needs and strong customer service skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational and analytical skills.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
- Comfortable working in a small team environment and taking a hands-on approach.
- Flexibility for a hybrid schedule and up to 25% travel.
Salary range: $100 - $110K.
