JOB SUMMARY:
The duties of this position will support youth program participants, engage in activities that are associated with the circle of wellness, improve cultural identity, improve academic achievement and promote youth leadership roles.
MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assisting with supervision of students throughout the duration of the Youth Program.
- Assisting regular staff with advising and helping students.
- Participating in youth activities and programs, while displaying a professional, enthusiastic and courteous demeanor at all times.
- Teaching students to anticipate difficult situations and deal with them.
- Creating opportunities to provide students with positive attention.
- Encouraging program interaction.
- Working with staff to ensure the success of the student.
- Serving as a role model for students.
- Planning and following directions from the management team of the department.
- Performing work in timely fashion.
- Maintaining a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that gets along with clients, co-workers and management.
- Offering excellent conflict resolution skills and being able to diplomatically handle confrontation.
- Participating in regular staff meetings to plan and implement activities.
- Enforcing rules to ensure safety at all times.
- Provide 1 on 1 services as need to youth with autism/Asperger's or challenging behaviors
- Performing related work appropriate to this assigned classification.
OTHER DUTIES:
Because of the Tribe's commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.

- Indian Preference Policy applies to this and all positions with the Nooksack Indian Tribe.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The following qualifications are required for the incumbent to have, in order to be considered for the position.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Have experience working with children/youth or in the role of a mentor for youth
- Must be at least 18 years of age
REQUIRED SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES POSITION:
- Must be able to present information to youth in a language they understand
- Must be able to develop and present activities reports as needed.
- Must have the ability to interact patiently with a diverse student population
- Must have the ability to communicate clearly and tactfully with students and adults
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality at all times.
REQUIRED CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Must pass alcohol/drug test at time of hire and throughout employment.
- Must pass criminal background check at time of hire and periodically thereafter.
- Must have obtained Hepatitis B Immunization or must obtain within 120 days of employment Subject to initial and periodic tuberculosis TB test/screen
REQUIRED LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS:
- Must have and maintain throughout employment a valid Washington State Driver's License and meet the insurability requirements of the Tribe. (Must Provide Driving Abstract at time of hire).
- Must have or obtain (within 3 months of hire) CPR certification and attend other required departmental certification trainings as required, e.g. Blood borne pathogens. All required certifications must be maintained current and in good standing throughout employment
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.):
- The standard work week Monday through Friday.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long periods and frequently required to talk and listen.
- Sitting for extended periods while at a desk or in meetings.
- Manual dexterity to operate a keyboard, calculator, and telephone system
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds without assistance occasionally.
- Read, write, speak and understand English.
- Ability to listen, understands customers, and has the ability to translate rules, regulations, policies to clients so they understand the issues/problems.
- Operate in mentally and physically stressful situations with composure.
- Must be able to bend, reach, kneel, twist, and grip from assigned work areas.
- Work may be performed indoors and outdoors in varies climates
- Must be able to actively engage in activities with the youth.
