Job Description:
The school guidance program is part of the total school program at Noor-Ul-Iman and complements learning in the classroom. It is child-centered, preventive, and developmental. The program encourages students’ social, emotional, personal, and spiritual growth at each stage of their development. Counseling at Noor-Ul-Iman School is understood to be integral to our students well-being as they come to know and love Allah and His Beloved Messenger ﷺ. We consider this to be the core purpose of our school.
Counseling is conducted with students when requested and determined appropriate. Counseling can be requested by students, parents, or teachers, administrators, or other school staff. The counselor complements the staff’s efforts to meet the needs of students individually, in small groups, and in entire classrooms. The guidance counselor will provide students with assistance in:
· Understanding self and developing a positive self-image.
· Addressing and resolving their spiritual questions.
· Showing respect for the feelings of others.
· Understanding the decision-making process.
· Maintaining effective relationships with peers and adults.
· Developing skills in interacting and communicating with others.
· Developing effective study skills.
· Recognizing the causes and effects of their actions.
· Becoming responsible for their own behavior.
· Making transitions within the school.
· Dealing with a crisis.
The guidance counselor will also:
- Meet with students who do not perform well at the mid-way point and end of the marking period and, if appropriate, formulate a plan of action for success involving the student and the parent.
- Plan and/or promote programs which enhance the academic, social or emotional growth of students.
- Work with students who have discipline, attendance and academic problems and are referred by administrators.
- Work with teachers to better help them understand students with physical or emotional challenges.
- Assure that appropriate, accurate information is maintained in each student’s permanent, cumulative record.
The counselor may also meet with parents and participate in parent/teacher conferences in order to help the parents understand their child’s progress in school and to help the parents select appropriate strategies for working with their child.
The guidance counselor reports to their administrator for anything pertaining to students. Thus, the counselor and administrators' roles are complimentary as they aim to adopt a restorative approach to discipline. The guidance counselor agrees to perform any duty delegated as being in the best interest of Noor-Ul-Iman School, and also agrees to abide by all school policies and decisions now or herein with existing. The position is a full time role with the hours being from 7:30 AM-4 PM.
