JOB SUMMARY:

This is a registered Apprenticeship opportunity, subject to rules and obligations of such programs per the US DOL. It is a paying job opportunity to learn and work in a construction/ oilfield environment, in conjunction with formal secondary education. The program allows for compensation increases while education and job responsibilities increase, provided outlined objectives are met over the registered program term.

The Electrician Apprentice works alongside the Senior Electrician to install, troubleshoot, repair, maintain, commission, and test electrical equipment and systems on rigs.

This is a two-year apprenticeship program, working a rotational position in the field working typically 12-hour days, two weeks on / two weeks off. In addition, the program requires secondary education either before or during the apprenticeship. Apprentices are not paid to attend school, although tuition and fees are paid for by the company. It is a demanding position, so applicants are encouraged to ensure they can dedicate the time and resources to complete it.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Collaborate with the Electrician regarding maintenance, repairs, and planning in order to avoid the risk of delay caused by equipment breakdown.

  • Responsible for informing rig manager weekly or more often what electrical supplies, tools, and parts should be in stock and ensuring that they are readily available to ensure the safe operational level of the rig, camp, and vehicles that are assigned to the electricians work site.

  • Assigned to install and/or repair equipment during rig and camp moves.

  • Learn the principles of electricity, single, and three phase up to 600 volts.  Work with equipment to convert AC to DC power by way of a silicone control rectifier (SCR rig only).

  • Must possess good mechanical aptitude and skills. 

  • Performs any other duties that may be assigned.

HSE RESPONSIBIITIES:

  • Conducts his job duties safely and in compliance with his certification, experience, and Nordic’s HSE policies.

  • Follows work permitting requirements.

  • Assist rig management in identifying operational non-conformances at the work site.

  • Reports any spills, un-safe work conditions, and work site hazards immediately.

  • Assist in development and implementation of standard operating procedures.

  • Assists in any internal audits, as necessary.

  • Assist Electrician in daily rig site duties.

SUPERVISORY FUNCTIONS:

This position has no supervisory functions.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Ability to perform all work and always communicate with others in a professional demeanor.

  • Growing knowledge of equipment hydraulics, preventative maintenance and repairs that can be done on site.

  • Ability and desire to learn well control and downhole hydraulics.

  • Ability and desire to learn to use calculations needed to perform essential functions.

  • Ability and desire to learn with preventive maintenance systems such as Pason.

  • Ability to analyze problems from data and to identify root causes and provide efficient solutions.

  • Ability to cope and adapt to sudden changes in surrounding or emergency situations.

  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and to retain and recall instructions in short term memory.

  • Ability to communicate with all levels of the organization including employees professionally and effectively, business partners, and third-party vendors via written and verbal communication methods. Ability to work with concentration, accuracy, and attention to detail.

  • Must understand and apply professional standards and presentation internally and externally.

  • Ability to actively participate in group meetings.

  • Work requires willingness to work a flexible schedule.

  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe and efficient manner.

  • Ability to travel to and work in remote locations for extended periods of time.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

  • Ability to obtain Alaska Electrical Apprentice’s Fitness Card within two (2) weeks of hire date.

  • Ability to obtain or currently hold North Slope Training cooperative card.

  • Willingness to complete online learning milestones to obtain Journeyman’s Electrician License within program timeframe from designated institution.

  • Willingness to abide by terms and conditions of registered apprenticeship program.

  • Must be able to travel and work in remote locations for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to pass a drug and background screening.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Remote, industrial (noisy, wet, oily steel floor) environment frequently exposed to extreme weather conditions both on and offshore and may require work at various heights on the rig.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Frequently: Sitting, Standing, Walking, Bending Over, Pushing or Pulling, Talking, Grasping, Lifting 50 lbs. or less, Carrying 50 lbs. or less, Eye/Hand coordination.

VISUAL ACUITY:

Frequently: Distance vision (clear at 20' or more), Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), Peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point), Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus). Continuously: Close vision (clear at 20" or less), Depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and special relationships).

MENTAL EFFORT:

Frequently: Discriminating colors. Continuously: Thinking analytically, using effective verbal & written communication, Handling stress & emotions, concentrating on tasks, remembering details, making decisions, adjusting to changes, and examining/observing details.
