Special Education Teacher, High Needs

REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university
- Valid, current Nebraska teaching certificate with an endorsement in special education
- Training and/or experience in special education teaching
REPORTS TO: Building Principal and Director of Special Education
RECEIVES GUIDANCE FROM: Building Principal and Director of Special Education
JOB GOAL: To enable students who are learning disabled and mild/moderately handicapped to derive the best possible educational experience from school through appropriate functional programming which is integrated into the community and school environment to the greatest extent possible
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Nine-month year or as established by the Board of Education
EVALUATION: Evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the district’s Personnel Evaluation Policy
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Consistent and punctual "on site" attendance at the worksite is an essential job function
- Participates as a member of a multidisciplinary team for evaluating, planning and implementing programs for students
- Coordinates with the building administrator, classroom teachers, and specialists to assure that the special education program is an integral part of the building educational endeavor
- Participates in all school-related activities and meetings that are expected of other teachers in the building
- Assure that accurate communication is maintained with each student's parent or guardians to keep them informed of progress and program
- Update Individualized Educational Programs in accordance with Rule 51: Rules and Standards Governing Special Education Programs
- Coordinate with itinerant staff (ex. physical and occupational therapist and speech pathologist) to insure a totally consistent functionally integrated program
- Develop an appropriately functionally curriculum to the greatest extent possible
- Engage students in non-school instruction as appropriate
- Serve as an active member of the multi-disciplinary team
- Keeps accurate attendance and progress records
OCCASIONAL
- Relates with staff, parents and community through positive professional cooperation
- Suggests positive recommendations for the continuing review and development of curriculum
- Remains current with professional training and shows evidence of regular professional growth
- Actively participates at scheduled staff meetings and serves on educational committees
- Assumes responsibility periodically for conferences with parents
- Recognizes the extra curriculum program as integral to the educational development of the child
- Performs other duties within the scope of employment and certification as assigned by the appropriate administrator
