Job Title: Sports Official
Status: P/T Non-Exempt Department: Sports & Rec
Reports to: Sports & Rec Director
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Sports Official at the Norm
Waitt Sr. YMCA serves others by intentionally welcoming, connecting, and supporting them and inviting them to get involved and give back to the community. Hours are Saturdays from 7am - 1pm.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Assists in teaching sports through appropriate officiating techniques and procedures.
2. To be aware of the differences in each child’s physical and emotional maturity, personality, backgrounds, and motivation.
3. Provides for upkeep of assigned program facilities and equipment and ensures the physical environment supports a safe and thriving environment including ADA accommodations where appropriate. Follows all procedures and standards.
4. To supervise the players before, during, and after games.
5. To oversee program equipment, sport fields, and gym areas.
6. To communicate with coaches to promote proper sport specific techniques.
7. To demonstrate to players the rules of the sport through teachable moments.
8. To communicate with the Sports and Rec Director, any questions or concerns.
9. To serve as a positive role model to the players, parents, coaches and fellow officials by following all rules, demonstrating good sportsmanship, and officiating consistency with the Y Sports and Rec philosophy.
10. Ensures proper time management of game schedules.
11. Demonstrates and supports the objectives of the Y’s mission statement and values by maintain the Y-
Voice in all that you say and do ~ welcoming, hopeful, determined, genuine, and nurturing.
12. Promote character development by demonstrating the Y’s values- caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
13. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Job Title: Sports Official

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Must be at least 16 years of age.
2. Knowledge of the general rules of the specific sport.
3. Must complete the following trainings:
- Approved Mandatory Child Abuse Reporter Certification
- Emergency procedure training
- Complete the online Officials training found at http://training.ymca.net prior to the first game of the season.
4. Must have good interpersonal and communications skills.
5. Promote an atmosphere of cooperation and sportsmanship between players and coaches.
6. Consistently and impartially makes appropriate calls and take opportunities to teach violating players when infractions and penalties occur.
7. Previous experience with diverse populations.

- Ability to Lift 25 pounds using proper technique.
- Outdoor exposure to wind, sun and summer & winter temperatures
- Work in a team environment and encourage open communication regarding concerns/issues with children, parents or co-workers.
- Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position, including running, walking, standing for long periods of time, bending, reaching, and lifting.
EFFECT ON END RESULT:
- The Y will be recognized by the community as providing consistent and clear sports officiating which develops each participant’s knowledge of the sport.
- The Y will effectively connect and build relationship with its participants and the community, increasing member enrollment and retention and ultimately increasing the number of people positively impacted by the Y.
Hours per week:
- Less than 10
- Saturdays 7am - 1pm (may change)
