What are the responsibilities and job description for the Adams Wells Special Services Co-Op-Blind/Low Vision Itinerant Teacher position at North Adams Community Schools?
The following position is available for the 2025 - 2026 school year:
Position: Blind Low Vision Teacher (PreK - 12)
Location: Adams Wells Special Services Cooperative (serving five area school districts)
Through direct instruction and consultation, BLV teacher will utilize instructional methods and techniques which enhance the student's ability to improve independent functioning and to access the instructional environment. The applicant will have an opportunity to work alongside an experienced BLV teacher to support a transition into the position.
Qualifications:
Current Blind Low Vision Indiana Teaching License
OR
Hold a bachelor's degree with an Indiana Teaching License in either general education or special education and be willing to obtain the Blind Low Vision License by completing the Indiana State University Pass Project.. Requirements:
- Ability to communicate effectively with groups of students, parents, and school staff through conversation and correspondence.
- Ability to plan and organize and adhere to scheduling and/or timeline requirements.
- Ability to travel throughout the day between school sites in Adams and Wells counties.
- Ability to work collaboratively with school staff, families, and outside providers.
Duties:
- Provide instruction and supports for school staff and students in general education and special education settings to ensure that students receive the necessary support to achieve academic and functional success.
- Work with the school psychologist and other team members to complete comprehensive evaluations of students' visual functioning and educational needs.
- As Teacher of Record, the Blind Low Vision teacher is responsible for developing, monitoring, and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) tailored to each student's specific visual impairments and learning goals.
- Instructs students in the use of magnification equipment, large print materials and/or braille systems to access general education curriculum.
- Coordinate schedule between outside provider and school for Orientation and Mobility services.
- Responsible for obtaining large print textbooks, recorded textbooks, braille materials, assistive devices, and other adapted materials for students.
- Manage inventory of adapted materials.
