Position: After-School Program Health Teacher/Nurse
Department: North Andover High School
Reports to: Program Coordinator or Building Principal
Summary
The After-School Program Health Teacher/Nurse plays a key role in supporting the BREATHE Program’s mission to promote health empowerment, resilience, and decision-making skills in students. This position focuses on delivering health education and restorative support in an after-school setting. The individual in this role works closely with students, staff, and families to provide health education, address behavioral and health challenges, and foster a safe and supportive environment.
Key Responsibilities
Health Education
- Develop and deliver engaging lessons on topics such as the risks of vaping, addiction, and healthy decision-making, using evidence-based curricula Catch My Breath.
- Customize lessons to address the specific needs of program participants, ensuring cultural and developmental relevance.
Student Support
- Provide one-on-one or small group health counseling to students with health violations.
- Collaborate with the program coordinator to develop and implement restorative plans that address students’ health and behavioral needs.
- Support students in understanding the consequences of their choices and in developing healthier habits.
Health Monitoring and Guidance
- Assess and address any immediate health concerns for program participants.
- Act as a liaison between students, families, and school nursing staff regarding ongoing health needs.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA and FERPA guidelines in all health-related interactions.
Collaboration and Communication
- Work closely with program staff, school administration, and caregivers to ensure a coordinated approach to student health and wellness.
- Participate in team meetings to review student progress and refine program strategies.
- Communicate program goals and outcomes to families in a clear, empathetic, and professional manner.
Record-Keeping and Reporting
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of student participation, health education activities, and interventions.
- Provide regular reports on program activities and outcomes to the program coordinator and administration.
Professional Development
- Stay current on best practices in health education, adolescent wellness, and restorative approaches to behavioral health.
- Participate in training sessions to enhance knowledge of evidence-based programs and strategies.
Qualifications
Education and Certification
- For Health Teachers: Bachelor’s degree in Health Education, Nursing, or a related field (Master’s preferred); Massachusetts teaching certification in Health Education is required.
- For Nurses: RN or LPN licensure in the state of Massachusetts; Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or a related field is preferred.
Experience
- Experience working with adolescents in educational or health-focused settings.
- Familiarity with restorative practices, behavioral interventions, and evidence-based health education programs.
- Experience with Catch My Breath or similar curricula is a plus.
Skills and Abilities
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to engage effectively with students, staff, and families.
- Ability to deliver engaging, age-appropriate health education lessons.
- Competence in handling sensitive information with confidentiality and professionalism.
- Organizational skills to manage lesson planning, record-keeping, and reporting.
- Knowledge of adolescent development, substance use prevention, and health promotion strategies.
Working Conditions
- This position operates in an after-school setting, typically in a designated classroom or health education space.
- May involve occasional travel for professional development or program-related activities.
- Flexibility in hours is required to accommodate after-school programming.
Compensation
- Hourly rate as outlined by CBA– $40 per hour
