Position Overview
Primary Purpose of Position
This position is primarily responsible to operate, maintain, coordinate the repair and upgrade of the University’s fire alarms, sprinkler, fire extinguishers, life safety and hood systems. This position also performs building inspections and construction monitoring of all new and renovated building construction on campus.
The position must effectively communicate regulations in a concise and accurate manner, completes duties in a responsible manner, establishes and recommends procedural changes to ensure safety standards and methods are applied, and determines corrective actions when unsafe conditions are identified. This position works with a diverse group including faculty, staff, students, the public as well as external agency representative and must manage sensitive matters in a professional manner.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The purpose of the Environmental Health and Safety Office is to provide a variety of Environmental Health and Safety services to all administrative units, student programs and all academic schools and departments. Services include: risk assessment (hazard analysis, risk identification, loss control safety measures for the University), response to on-campus calls regarding fire alarm malfunctions, installation and service, and to reduce the actual loss of labor and equipment resources in the administration of services.

- Conducts structured life safety inspections as assigned to maintain compliance with Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and Department of Interior (DOI) regulations.
- Responds to panel notification of alarms and trouble signals.
- Ensures all National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) test requirements and provide the correct documentation.
- Develops and maintains safety projects and programs and makes recommendations to the Safety Director concerning the need for new policies and revisions of existing policies.
- Maintains and updates the ADA program including making recommendations.

- Performs general inspections of buildings and grounds in order to make hazardous assessments and recommendations; submits and tracks corrections.
- Inspects assigned structures on a monthly basis to assure the continuous operation of life safety systems.
- Inspects fire extinguishers on a monthly basis.
- Oversight and audit of the lockout/tagout program
