Description of Work

**As of January 1, 2025, the NEW salary range for this position is $35,984 - $62,971.***
This position will be assigned to Johnston Correctional Institution, position will be assigned to a housing unit in the custody area. This position will carry a case load of inmates, which involves supportive counseling, answering and following up on inmate questions and problems, and making recommendations to the classification committee. This position will also assist in major dynamic programs or coordinate major or specialized programs for the rehabilitation of inmates such as inmate work assignments, work release, education, or recreation, as well as transition planning and coordinating. Effective verbal/written communication with other staff, inmates, and the general public. Be capable of defending oneself against attach by violent persons. Work under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with visual/audio surveillance of assigned work area. Accurately operate office machines/prepare written reports/forms which accurately reflect information reviewed from various sources. Demonstrate/instruct inmates in the proper safe use of tools, equipment/supplies. Review, analyze/evaluate various documents and behavioral data gathered from interview/documentation/ personal observation. Perform crisis intervention/routine counseling to include suicide prevention. Account for supplies/equipment. Implement/manage correctional programs. This position will be required to work some evenings, weekends & holidays.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.

The salary grade for this position is NC08. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate s degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Public Safety; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

The Division of Institutions employs over 19,000 staff, operates 56 institutions and is responsible for the care and custody of approximately 30,000 incarcerated individuals across North Carolina. Our division categorizes the institutions into 3 custody levels, which include minimum, medium, and close. This is in addition to submitting fingerprints during the application process.
