Description of Work
This position is assigned to Maury Correctional Institution located in Hookerton, NC. Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer III's in a close custody institution with restrictive and controlled housing. Position assigns lower level custody staff to a particular area or post. Employees oversee officer activities and performance and ensures that the custody, security and welfare of offenders is maintained. Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy. Employees at this level supervise more staff than recognized in the lower level Correctional Sergeant I or II. Positions report directly to a Correctional Lieutenant III and/or Correctional Housing Unit Manager. Ensures that staff are fully trained and that proper conduct, actions and procedures are followed. Maintains facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance and health and safety of inmates. Gives direction during drills, searches and in emergencies. May refer offenders to restrictive housing for temporary assignment. May lead staff in carrying out tactical assignments. Responds to emergency situations, searches for escaped offenders and transports offenders. Conducts and/or supervises searches of offenders, their living quarters and work areas for contraband. Investigates and takes action when appropriate regarding security issues, incidents, disputes and complaints. Prepares and reviews a variety of reports. Completes annual performance evaluations and assists in assessing, evaluating and implementing employee discipline. Conducts staff briefing sessions. Performs other related duties as required. Must be eligible for certification by the NC Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as a Correctional Officer III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.

Per NC General Statute 143B-972.1 (Download PDF reader), applicants hired into a position certified as a criminal justice officer or justice officer are required to electronically submit fingerprints to the NC State Bureau of Investigation for a state and national criminal history record check and enrollment in the FBI’s Next Generation Identification System: Criminal Justice Record of Arrest and Prosecution Background Service (“RAP Back”). This is in addition to submitting fingerprints during the application process.
